USB device not detected at all

Post by kassebasse »

Hey.

Recently my USB-ports are not working at all with any USB-memory sticks. I have tried several and and they are working on other computers. They do not show up either in "fdisk -l" or Disks or Gparted. I have tried to boot from a USB-stick and it works just fine. So it is not a hardware issue. I have tried 2 different kernels and all of them don't seem so solve the issue either. My kernel is currently 5.4.0-96-generic. I have tried that one that ens with .92 as well and I think .94 also. Do you guys have any suggestions on how I can resolve this issue?

Hello kassebasse,

what happens, when you plug in a USB memory stick before power on your computer? Is this then detected in Linux Mint?

When one or two of them are plugged in, can you go to number 5 in the following link and follow the instructions:
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=83444

Also what is the output of

Code: Select all

I tried to boot up the pc with the USB-memory stick inserted while the computer was booting. It detected the USB from the start a while, and I could browse it. After maybe 2 minutes, the USB-memory stick got "unmounted" and in the Disks program it says "No Media". Note that I have not even touched the USB-memory stick or unmounted it. I don't even have a option to mount the USB again in disks.

Hello kassebasse,

do you have a desktop computer or a laptop? Maybe you want to show your system informations:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxxxrz
I have a hunch that it might have something to do with the auto-suspending of the USB ports.

Do you boot from USB stick and yet when you start Mint the USB sticks aren't detected?
If I have helped you solve a problem, please add [SOLVED] to your first post title, it helps other users looking for help.

This is a laptop. And no, I am not trying to boot of the USB-stick, because I am booting linux mint of the harddrive, the installation is maybe 2 years old by now. I just had the USB-stick plugged in to the computer while I was booting of the harddrive (I am sure that I am booting of the harddrive). The USB-stick got detected for a short while and then just got "unmounted"

Hello kassebasse,

when it's a laptop, do you use programs like TLP for power saving?

No, I only use what's it comes with for linux mint for powersaving and stuff. I did try get hiberation to work on my computer, but I was unsuccessful. But the USB worked after I tried it so I don't think that should be causing the problem.

Hello kassebasse,

do you have a timeshift snapshot from before the USB problem began, which you can restore?

No, unfortuately not. I have a limited amount of disk space so I have timeshift setup so it will take a fresh timeshift backup every boot. So in case the computer cannot boot, I can restore it.

Hello kassebasse,

you should think about your timeshift strategy. When you only have this one daily snapshot, you have a high risk to save a fault and can't go back anymore. Often you recognize faults coming with an update or an installation with the next reboot or sometimes days later. If you have not enough space on your disk, you could use an external device for the snapshots. I only make snapshots manually normaly one per month and additionally when needed. And I only hold maximum two of them. That's enough to restore your system. Here you can read the view about timeshift from Pjotr on his easylinuxtipsproject:

https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.c ... t.html#ID7

deepakdeshp asked you:

I think he wanted to ask, what happens if you boot with your installation medium (USB/DVD) into the live system from where you installed LM. Are the USB memory sticks mounted without fail and stay?

Hi, I had the same problem.

I noticed that only the newer usb sticks didnt work.

A kernel upgrade using the mint application manager solved the problem for me.
