Can't install on 10TB drive

10TB WD102KRYZ 6Gbs SATA - can't install Linux Mint (20.3 cinnamon from live image) which is giving I/O errors. Drive sounds as I would expect. I have an 8TB version of this drive with no problems, but I wonder if I've either got a faulty drive, or I've crossed a limit.

what motherboard are you connecting the drive to and which BIOS revision is it running? the drive may exceed what the board can handle if it's an older system so it's worth checking. posting the output of inxi -Fxxxrz would help. No personally identifiable information is exposed by that command.

I can't. The kernel isn't liking the drive so any operation on it, fails.

ASRock FM2A88X-ITX+ P3.40 - I'll check for a BIOS update, as the on board internet update fails

3.40 is the latest from 2016

on the off-chance the SATA cable is bad, try swapping it. There's nothing glaringly obvious from that board's support pages or manual that indicates it is not compatible so there's either a dodgy cable, potential incompatibility still given it's an enterprise drive with 512e* sector size, not true 4K or it's just a bad drive which needs returning for a replacement or refund.

*512e is the advanced format in which the physical sector size is 4,096 bytes, but the logical sector size emulates 512 bytes sector size

Cable swap and test was among the first things on the list.

I'll contact the vendor and see where we go. Might try it in my NAS to see if that picks it up. Not how I wanted to use it, but hey ho!

NAS didn't like it either. Red lighted it seconds after insertion and wouldn't initialise it.

Strange, the fdisk doesnt direct it unless the OP didnt copy the full output.

It wasn't being picked up properly at all by the system or their NAS for even creating a partition table. Dead on arrival unfortunately
