[SOLVED] Bushnell Phantom2 Golf GPS Won't Mount
Hi Everyone
I've looked everywhere and can't figure this out. I have a Bushnell Phantom 2 golf GPS rangefinder. To update it you need to connect to a computer via usb cable. Works fine with Windows but won't mound with Linux Mint (Didn't work with Ubuntu either). It plugs in and charges but doesn't mount as a drive. Doesn't show in disk management and doesn't show in terminal sudo fdisk -l to set up mount. Not sure if anyone knows a solution to mount a usb device? Thanks

Re: Bushnell Phantom2 Golf GPS Won't Mount
Sounds very like most GPS satnav devices which do not allow updating maps using Linux.
The only way I managed to overcome this was to use a very old virtual install of Windows XP on which I could install the TomTom update application.
I know it is a security risk but I had a known clean snapshot of it and always reverted to that after putting that XP VM on the web.
Does your device need an installed application in order to update it or do you just download new data and add it to the device.
I've no idea if such an old Windows version would be any use for you as that may not support your device either but I offer the information in the hope that you may find an answer in a similar manner, perhaps even using wine or playonlinux to run the Windows application, if there is one..

Re: Bushnell Phantom2 Golf GPS Won't Mount
Thanks for the reply. There's actually not an application to install, it updates over their website in a browser. The problem is I can't get the device to mount in Linux so I can select it for the website to perform the update. So not a software issue, a mounting hardware issue.
Re: Bushnell Phantom2 Golf GPS Won't Mount
Do you have any idea what fiiesystem is used on your rangefinder?
With the device attached show us the output of commands
And copy that output back here using the code tags in the toolbar above, ie the </> icon.

Re: Bushnell Phantom2 Golf GPS Won't Mount
It has a Fat32 file system
Like I was saying in my original post sudo fdisk -l doesn't recognise the device. I appreciate the help, would be great to figure it out

Re: Bushnell Phantom2 Golf GPS Won't Mount
A fat32 partition will normally mount automatically when attached by USB so I'm afraid I am a bit unsure why that device, if really fat32, will not mount.
With the device attached what does terminal command show as output? It may be nothing at all but it might give us a clue to where we go next, though I don't hold out too much hope for complete success.

Re: Bushnell Phantom2 Golf GPS Won't Mount
Their website is pretty clear they only support Windows. It would seem the hardware device is looking for something specific in the Windows software in order to mount. Maybe it has some type of serial connection for data upgrades. I've helped people with automotive diagnostic equipment attach to Linux Mint and those run over serial ports (but the actual attachment is a usb port). However, the manufacturer of those devices also gives clear directions on what software is needed and what ports need opened to connect to their equipment.TonyK wrote: ⤴Fri Jan 27, 2023 5:33 pm Thanks for the reply. Maybe you can update it at a local library computer?

Re: Bushnell Phantom2 Golf GPS Won't Mount
Thank you for the reply. I agree it's possible it's manufacturer/driver related, just use my Linux computer more than my windows computer and I'm always challenging that anything I can do on a windows laptop I can do on my Linux laptop but unfortunately that isn't always the case. Mostly but not always lol.
Re: [SOLVED]Bushnell Phantom2 Golf GPS Won't Mount
So I called Bushnell support and they told me it won't work on a Linux operating system, actually said others have problems with Mac too.
Thanks
