Locked USB Stick

Post by sswcharlie »

Hi

What is the latest remedy to unlock a usb stick. Has files on I want to access. Another usb I have is ok, but just the one causing trouble.

Is there an app or remedy to fix indivdual usb sticks. Hadd a look at post 6 years ago but required formatting the usb and losing all.

Thanks

Charles

the issue is with Permissions on that usb stick.

thus, if those files were written by another user - or by another system, too
- then you don't have Ownership of those files, and can only Read Them
no modify .. no write .. is allowed.

how did you write those files ? on an different machine ?.

Hi Pierre

Thanks for message.
The usb stick has only been used on my laptop and I am the only user.
The second usb now locked as well.

With say a brand new usb stick is it possible to disable the 'write protection' so it can never be locked ?

Thankyou
Charles

Hi Charles,

Is this a problem physically with the stick or with permissions as suggested? To find out try this:

Open a term window and type in:

Code: Select all

tail -f /var/log/kern.log
Then plug in the usb stick. Note the messages that pop up and capture that and post it here. We are looking to see if it actually creates a device for it (i.e. /dev/sdc1...ect..).

If it does then its going to be perhaps some type of permissions issue as stated.

Write protection is a different issue. Usually a switch. Otherwise, best solution seems to be hdparm (already installed, by the way). Write protection doesn't preclude access, though, which is the problem you report. Might be permissions, as Pierre suspects, but also might be hardware failure.
