Netbook and SD Card

Post by BennyS » Wed Sep 07, 2011 12:30 pm

Hi all,
I've got a Netbook with an SD card reader which I'm desperately trying to get to work. I'm running Linux Mint 11 and have split up the computer's HD into a swap partition, a partition to mount / and one to mount /home. I'm trying to use the machines SD card reader to auto mount my camera's memory card. At the moment I've got it to mount through using the mount command in terminal and have also tried adding to the fstab which caused problems during start-up so chickened out and copied back my back-up copy.

cat /etc/fstab outputs:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# Use 'blkid -o value -s UUID' to print the universally unique identifier
# for a device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name
# devices that works even if disks are added and removed. See fstab(5).
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
proc /proc proc nodev,noexec,nosuid 0 0
# / was on /dev/sdb2 during installation
UUID=07256c27-278f-4aac-89c5-6c86a321b4dd / ext4 errors=remount-ro 0 1
# /home was on /dev/sdb3 during installation
UUID=4d3a8e8b-f45d-470f-b0ff-453401f572e2 /home ext4 defaults 0 2
/dev/sdb1 none swap sw 0 0
What do I have to add to the fstab for the card to auto mount -I believe it too is /dev/sdb1?
Any help would be most appreciated, cheers :)

What version of Mint 11 are you using? Gnome? If you insert your sd card and open Nautilus, does the card not show up on the left hand side of the Nautilus window?

Hi,
Yes its the Gnome version of Mint 11. When I put the SD card in nothing happens... it has auto mounted before when I tested my netbook with MeeGo and also Ubuntu but it doesn't want to go with Mint. I can make it mount through the terminal by typing:

Code: Select all

sudo mount -t vfat /dev/sdb1 /media/Lumix -o uid=1000,gid=100
I wondered if it had anything to do with a device being called sdb1 already appearing in fstab but when I removed these lines it all went wrong.

Solved! :D
My hunch was correct... I logged in as root, commented out the last line on the fstab and all works well!
Many thanks!
