Since you're running old Mint 18.1, based upon Ubuntu 16.04, this post at Ask Ubuntu might help.

However, you haven't given much explanation on the exact problem you're having.

Thanks. The Ask Ubuntu post describes exactly my problem.
Does the LiDE 120 work well on Mint 19 ?

Do any of the solutions discussed help?

I don't have any specific info on your scanner, but you could try booting a Mint 19 or 19.1 Live CD/Flash drive and test. The release notes on 19.1 do mention problems detecting scanners due to a regression in libsane. Might be better to test Mint 19.

I've installed Mint 19.1 and my LiDE 120 worked immediately!
Problem solved.
