[Solved] Brother MFC-J870DW

Post by brmccarty » Fri Mar 07, 2014 9:23 pm

Got tired of fighting my Kodak printer that doesn't have Linux driver and bought one that does have Linux drivers.
I can't get this to work at all!
I get to here http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bs ... prn1a.html.
and have to go here http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bs ... e.html#002 to satisfy pre-required procedure (2).
When I try to run the commands this is what I get.

Code: Select all

billy@billy-laptop ~ $ sudo aa-complain cupsd
[sudo] password for billy:
sudo: aa-complain: command not found
billy@billy-laptop ~ $ sudo mkdir /usr/share/cups/model
mkdir: cannot create directory `/usr/share/cups/model': File exists
billy@billy-laptop ~ $

Update Brother MFC-J870DW

Post by brmccarty » Sun Mar 09, 2014 11:40 pm

I managed to get it printing.
I ignored the errors I posted above and continued installing the lpr and cupswrapper drivers.
Then went to Menu > Settings > Printing
Add printer > network printer > selected the MFC-J870DW > put in the correct URI (IP) and it prints.

Now to tackle the scanner.

I know that this thread is a bit old by now, and am not sure that anyone is watching it still. But just in case someone is: I also have the Brother MFC-J870DW, and, using the install tool mentioned above by pdc_2, did get it to print via the wireless connection. But not to scan. Neither Simple Scan nor gscan2pdf seem to be able to communicate or to correctly identify the printer. I detailed my troubles in this post: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=207068, and would be extremely thankful for any help.

edit: never mind, my problem is gone. Starting printer installation from scratch and identifying printer by IP address did the trick for me.
