Mint 17, Canon MG5220, not printing after installing drivers

Post by freedeb » Tue Oct 07, 2014 8:52 pm

Hi,
I've installed the drivers that go with the printer, using these instructions: http://linuxg.net/how-to-install-driver ... ry-os-0-2/

I also used the IP address (printed out on the "network configuration page") to get the dialogue box at <Menu -> Administration -> Printers> to find and add the Canon Pixma MG5220 printer we have. It asked if I would like to print a test page, which I said yes to. It never printed the test page.

I opened gedit to try printing from there, also nothing. And after rebooting, trying again, then deleting and re-adding the printer, trying again, and re-booting one more time, still nothing will print. I was getting a short message in the top right hand corner that says, "Printer error printer Canon..." although I can't seem to replicate that now.

When I look at the dialogue box at <Menu -> Administration -> Printers> now, it shows a little printer labeled "Canon" with a green check mark on it.
In the "Printer properties" menu, I have the following information to share:

Device URI: cnijnet:/88-87-17-45-2D-AB
Make and model: Canon MG5200 series - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.10-pre2
Printer state: Idle - Rendering completed

About the machine:
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4200U CPU @ 1.60GHz
x86_64
Linux Mint 17 Qiana

I know Canon doesn't do much to support GNU/Linux but this printer worked with my previous Ubuntu laptop so I have hope that there is some tweak that will help.
Thanks in advance for any help with this!

using Gutenprint, NOT the Canon 5200 driver ..

Post by pdc_2 » Wed Oct 08, 2014 3:10 am

so Canon supply the MG5200 series drivers; in debian and rpm format; and with 32bit and 64bit variants;

if you can open a terminal, can you paste this command to see if libtiff4 is installed please;
dpkg -l | grep libtiff4

from this
CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.10-pre2
you have the open source Gutenprint driver installed; and NOT the Canon driver;

_____________________________________

to install the Canon driver, one needs to install libtiff4 from the Debian source ftp://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/pool/main/t/tiff3/ .....if not already installed .............

......and to do this, go 14 down the list; to the libtiff that is amd64 .............as you click, it should be available to download and install .............

______________________________________

to install the Canon drivers, go here http://support-asia.canon-asia.com/cont ... tml?r=s&q=

and you will download cnijfilter-mg5200series-3.40-1-deb.tar.gz and to install, please copy and paste the commands that are below; line by line; into a terminal; and hit the ENTER key after each paste .....

............ the problem is: the printer needs to be seen by the router before the printer drivers are installed; with a wireless install, the install script will look to see if you recognises your printer; if it is already "seen" by the router, the install should go fine;

cd Downloads
tar -zxvf cnijfilter-mg5200series-3.40-1-deb.tar.gz
cd cnijfilter-mg5200series-3.40-1-deb
./install.sh

that should start the install script running; it will ask you for your sudo password and if your printer is already networked, all should go well ..........let us know ..........................

Many Thanks, to pdc_2! This pointed the way to got me up and running with the MG5220 and LMDE2 - I had to install the libtiff4 library and libjpeg8 -- Printer was already registered with router via WiFi. 'Terminal' install worked with Canon's driver and it is all up and working great. Thanks again!

Thanks to the Contributors above (again). My Canon Pixma MG5220 is successfully installed using the steps as first noted above. This is with my HP Elitebook 2540p running Linux Mint 17.3; Cinnamon Desktop; 64-bit OS.

I doubt I could have done this without the help posted above....Many Thanks! :D

After upgrading to MINT 19 (Cinnamon) I tried to configure my Canon MG5250 - WLAN attached.

Following this advise, I am stuck with a missing dependency:
libpng12-0 (>= 1.2.8rel)
.

Here the terminal output:

Code: Select all

Where can I get this missing package?

Thanks, I tried.

However, this package is missing:

Code: Select all

E: Paket libpng kann nicht gefunden werden.
Which means: "libpng cannot be found"

in our Mint 18, it is in the repositories; as shown in synaptic; and we have it installed
libpng.png
so open Synaptic; type in libpng .. ask it to search ... does it show up? If so, install

It looks that libpng 16 is in the repository and installed.
Libpng16.png
However, libpng12 is not there.

libpng12 is in the Debian repositories

Post by pdc_2 » Thu Aug 23, 2018 1:36 pm

Debian have it https://packages.debian.org/jessie/libpng12-0

scroll down to the bottom of the page Johannes and choose the right architecture

I wonder will the system tolerate having libpng12 and libpng16 at the same time ..

Thanks very much, I downloaded the package manually and could install the printer. Looks that it works.

However, on the page you referred to was a hint to add the DEBIAN packages to the sources list, which I tried also. This didn't work as I am missing the required signature.

Would this be a problem in the future?

So far both versions can coexist, as you wrote:

solved my little problem (where can I add this marker?)

thanks Johannes; glad it worked;

.. now you know where to find what you need (Debian has seemingly all obscure files on tap!!) I wouldn't add the repository

to add SOLVED: if you go back to the title of your first post and just add SOLVED there;

I hope you now have plenty of time to just use your printer! Best wishes

Thanks again. I found a way how to import the signature. But as you recommend, I will disable the repository.

Perhaps, for the benefit of others, you might detail what you've done.

Cheers.

First I added the Debian package to the package sources, as described here: https://packages.debian.org/jessie/libpng12-0

Code: Select all

deb http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian jessie main
(valid only for my environment!)

then in a terminal I executed:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
There the missing signature is displayed.

In System, package sources is a menu item to manage the signatures. Searching, using the first characters finds, downloads and installs the signature.

Repeating the command updates the system w/o errors.

Is his good enough described?
Thanks in advance, best regards Johannes
