HP Laserjet 1005 does nothing

Post by Transistorfips »

Hi,
I have LM 17.1 and a Laserjet 1005. When I try to print a test page a pop-up appears saying the process hast started but actually nothing happen with the printer. No movement, no LED blinking, nothing. Some seconds later even a popup appear the job has been completed.

This is preposterous.

All this crap happens with or without the additionally installed HPLIB status service.

A note about sudo. I had big difficulties with the sudo password. How can I find this password on my machine? HPLIB asked for it in a second installation process but always denied because of a false password. I'm wondering what's going on here...

A word about Linux Mint: One year ago I had a Ubuntu distri with the same printer wich ran flawlessly from the beginning. Hrrmpf..

sudo issues how can user find his sudo password

...........to be honest, you probably won't be the only one .. a bit of a worry, all this ............

I guess it needs to be in big capitals somewhere that when you install a linux distro, you will get to choose a special password .. and important to store it away somewhere safe ... what do you think happened to your password?

hplip do provide a trouble-shooting guide http://hplipopensource.com/node/332 but some might well be concerned that this issue over your sudo password needs to be sorted before anything else.

_________

when support is offered on linux forums; for printers other than hp; hp loyalists always say the answer is to buy an hp printer; I do hope we can see them offer you support if my pointers towards hp's trouble-shooting guideline is not enough; you may well be advised to post a separate thread; on your sudo issues; perhaps in the install and boot section as there you will likely find separate folks who specialise in those issues

For that HP Laserjet 1005 you might need to install proprietary firmware as well.... I have an HP Laserjet 1018 myself, which needs such extra proprietary firmware.

If my assumption is correct, then this how-to is probably fit for the HP Laserjet 1005, too:
https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/14

This remark of yours points in that direction:
I had big difficulties with the sudo password. How can I find this password on my machine? HPLIB asked for it in a second installation process but always denied because of a false password. I'm wondering what's going on here...
That probably was HPLIP requesting root authority for pulling and installing the firmware. If you don't enter your password correctly, no firmware will be installed.

When you've forgotten your password, then you can set a new password like this:

This Linux makes me hopping mad. GRRRR!!!!111!!

Hello Pjotr,
nice to read you again.
After solving the sudo issue this piss-poor hp-Installer thing starts but asserts hplip is corrupted. I assume this to be a downright lie.
I installed hplib-gui as noted on a link from https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/14
but the start menue does: nothing. This isn't the first time nothing happens after launching a program, btw.

Using the commandline I found:

But this doesn't really help solving the real problem (I think):
../.hplip/hplip-3.15.2-plugin.run file does not match its checksum. File
may have been corrupted or altered

I reinstalled hplib several times (reinstall, overwrite) but without success.

Well, you have an old printer, so you definitely don't need the latest HPLIP. The HPLIP version in the repositories of Mint is more than recent enough. So first do a complete removal of the current HPLIP, like this:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get purge hplip-gui
And then:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install hplip-gui
Possibly followed by:

Code: Select all

sudo hp-plugin

I had the same problem of not being able to get an HP P1005 to print, even if the OS said it was installed.
The "sudo apt-get install hplip-gui" solution installed the package that wasn't even there.
After I used the "sudo hp-plugin" command I was taken to an HP authorized site and software was installed for the printer (it was plugged in).
It fired up and it prints -- happy me!! I had a Win7 laptop that was almost unuseable... Mint is really fast on it. Double happy me :)

Same issue for M176n.
Perhaps the plugin really has been altered ;-)

http://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/hplip#installe ... on_d_hplip (section 4, in French) says that this is an Ubuntu 15.04 issue (I am not so sure of that) and that one would have to install an older hplip version. They also say how to do that. (Exercise your French.)

Edit 2015-07-08 11:40
Seemingly 3.15.2 does not support some printers. I'll try 3.15.6 or wait until the next LinuxMint update.

Edit 2015-07-08 13:30
I did not install, because the installer didn't find components which are already installed.

I have Linux Mint 17 and an HP P1005. Hardware is newly assembled and Linux
has worked well, except for printing at present.

It worked yesterday, but right now it does not print. Nothing has changed
except the date! I have reinstalled hplip and done other obvious things,
like powering down, checking cables, etc. When Mint boots up, the printer
does some cycling, indicating some degree of recognition. When printing is
attempted, no error messages or other indications of abnormality is displayed.
But the P1005 is as silent as a gravestone. The "print queue" does show the
jobs I intended to print, but says "held" at the right. Why should they be "held"?

Nothing wrong with the printer - prints perfectly from an old XP machine.
Until this is solved, I will have to move print files to the XP machine to
have them printed. Literally, a drag.

Note: I have been a big Linux fan, but frankly, I am getting frustrated with Linux as
a general replacement for Windows, and would not recommend it to the average
computer user. It is only for those who wish to play with their machine, are willing
to put up with bad behavior, and consult "forums" about it where no one has
exactly the same problem - instead of straightforward documentation leading to a solution.

I hope this helps:

Here is the official support page for that printer, I would go through those steps (if you haven't already):
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/mo ... tml#note10

I found threads where mac and windows 7 were having this problem, though it seemed network related.

I have an HP officejet and the HP steps worked well for me.

You may try this as well:

Code: Select all

* Is the printer installed and detected by HPLIP correctly? Run "hp-check -t" and verify under the "Installed Queues" section that there are no errors, and under "Discovered USB Devices" that your printer is listed.

* Run "hp-check" and verify that all of the required dependencies are installed. (missing optional dependency's is ok)

* Under the "Installed Queues" section of hp-check if there is a note saying "Required plug-in status:" verify that the plugin says "Installed". If it is NOT installed the printer will not work. To correct this, delete the printer queue and run "hp-setup" again to configure the printer, or you can try running "hp-plugin" to install the plugin directly.
which I pulled from here:
http://hplipopensource.com/node/332#printing2

All of the above is an official hp source.

This is getting a little off topic, I think that the most glaring problem in linux is that, in the beginning, no one is told to check the compatibility of their hardware and devices (unless of course they have read the release notes, which most never do... Including me). Which causes a big problem. I once bought a kodak printer that took me four days to get to print substandard prints.

Linux should be viewed as a different alternative to windows and not just a replacement. I read somewhere that Windows is like car and Linux is like a motorcycle. They both get to the end of the road, but if you treat a motorcycle like you would drive a car, there are going to be problems.

Jeepty-

Thanks for responding so quickly - I ran the "hp-check -t" as recommended - here is the part of the reply:

Type: Printer
Device URI: hp:/usb/HP_LaserJet_P1005?serial=BA07092
PPD: /etc/cups/ppd/HP_LaserJet_P1005.ppd

Printer status: printer HP_LaserJet_P1005 disabled since Thu 06 Aug 2015 09:29:00 AM EDTPaused

Afterwards, I tried the recommended "hp-setup". Here is what happened:

Done.

Of course, I have tried again and again. The above message does not explain or solve the problem, it just rubs salt in the wounds. "widget" indeed! What are they talking about?

Too bad, up till the last few days, everything worked fine.

Until this is fixed, I will now have to revert to Windows XP whenever I print. The bicycle has flat tires and a broken chain.

Hey Diacad,

I've assumed that your printer is wired directly to your linux machine. Could you please confirm that for me?

I had a very similar problem using an HP Laserjet p1007 (Linux Mint Cinnamon x64).

According to hplip, the version shipped with Mint 17.1 was hplip-3.14.3 (whereas Mint 17.2 comes with 3.15.2.).
None of the hplip-3.15.x worked for me.

I'm absolutely new to linux myself, but I noticed the hp cups is 3.14.3 (not 3.15.x)

This may or may not be relevant, but it seems like more than coincidence. Perhaps a person who knows could clarify?

I solved it by installing hplip-3.14.3.run.
This can be found at Sourceforge http://sourceforge.net/projects/hplip/f ... ip/3.14.3/

Change directories to where it was downloaded.
For example: if it was downloaded to the Downloads folder enter:

Code: Select all

cd /home/<username>/Downloads/
Run by entering

Code: Select all

sh hplip-3.14.3.run
Follow the on screen directions.
Afterwards, it should run hp-setup automatically (if not, you can do so manually in the terminal).

This worked for me, and I can now completely purge Windows from all of my systems and install Linux everywhere (except, perhaps, my wife's new Mac. I doubt she would be happy with that :) )

edit:
It might be that other versions (hplip-3.14.x.run) would work as well.
For those who are willing to try (test?), they can be found on this Sourceforge page:

Yes, the HP P1005 is connected directly to the Mint 17 machine. I have tried different USB sockets, with expected negative results.

The printer works perfectly on my old Windows XP machine, so I will just be using that when I want to print something out. Clumsy, but it works.

I still have an interest in getting it to work on Mint. Maybe it will when I upgrade to Mint 17.2 - but how do I know it won;t stop working there just when I need it, like it did before? Don't things stop working for a reason?

I hope this bug has been fixed in 17.2. Dealing with overly complex operating systems is like pushing on a string. Eother it works or it doesn't., and no one really knows why. So they go to forums, read the latest rumors, cut and try things that might have worked for others. It all seems so empirical and frustrating.

tbarmike-

If you read my output, in a few more lines, it says the required plugin was installed.

Thank you SO much for this post! i have an hp laserjet cp1025 that wasn't working, but reverting to 3.14.3 (along with your helpful instructions for installation) worked perfectly. i should add i first purged the current hplip version then installed 3.14.3. the setup daemon asks if you want to install the plugin from the hp site or select the file from the computer. well the ppd or plugin file doesn't exist on your puter yet, and the site will install the right plugin for the version you're installing. that's all i have to add.

big thanks again, mike! :D
