Another Scanner Story, Canon N670U (Plustex)

Mint 17.1 64 bit KDE, smoothest install yet of any distro except the scanner. I've got two Canon N670U scanners (rebranded Plustek) that ran fine under Mint 13 32 bit. Doing a

lists the exact make and model scanner. Scanner runs fine under http://www.hamrick.com/ (Vuescan) after I fixed their screwed up menu load. Their watermark trick, however, makes their software totally useless unless you are willing to pay their blood money. The scanners are also listed as compatible in this document -

I would just a soon not contribute to Bill Gates's created mountain of highly proprietary, highly toxic mountain of electronic waste. These scanners are very close to running under Xsane if I can find what is missing. I've been in /etc/sane.d and everything looks the same between Mint versions 13 and 17. There has to be something additional. Can anyone give me a clue what additional I can look at?

The scanners don't come up under the Xsane app or under Gimp

your best bet is to join the sane (development) mailing list; they are a friendly and very helpful; and active group; as you say, the device was till now completely supported;
