Problem with WIFI HP printer

Post by unlucky13 » Mon Aug 03, 2015 11:31 am

My old Brother printer died. Now I am having problems getting a new printer set up. The new printer is an HP Officejet 4632 it is hooked up totally wireless. I can get the printer to work when hooked up only under Windows 7. I cannot get the printer to work under LM17. I want the printer to work under Windows as well as LM17. What am I doing wrong? Any help would be appreciated. Please feel free to ask questions to try and get the printer working. Thanks in advance.

Have you installed the HPLIP driver?
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/mo ... eries.html

To my understanding, you need to have hplip-gui installed on your system. Then you connect the printer with the USB cable and in a terminal you type:

Code: Select all

hp-wificonfig
And then it will be able to use your printer with a WIFI connection.

If it ain't broke, fix it until it is.

OK, so it looks like I will need a USB cable to hook the printer up direct to the computer. If so, then I will have to buy a USB cable. Then I need to run hp-wificonfig and set up the HP Device manager. Once this is done then I can remove the USB cable and everything should work wireless. Am I understanding this right or is there an easier way? If I am missing anything in my understanding of this. Please let me know and Thanks for your help.

I don't actually know, because I have an Epson printer. This did not require a hard wired connection to any of the PCs I have installed Linux on.

My best advice is follow Pjotr's guide as above. They have proved invaluable in my quest to learn Linux Mint.

It looks like this will work after instating hp-wificonfig and using a USB printer cable. Have not had a chance to try it out yet to verify. It will take some work to set up and get all of the cable connections made. Looks like I may have a problem as well with a Dell Latitude D620. It does not seem to want to recognise wireless as well. I'll update when I have more time to look at this.

Well I am doing something wrong. I'm just not sure what. I bought the USB/printer cable. Ran the hp-wificonfig command. With the USB/printer cable hooked up. Everything looked like it worked up to that point. Went thru steps 1 - 5 with no errors. (Unhooked the USB cable at this point.) Is there another step I have to do after that? Looks like everything is completing but it still will not print. Any one have any idea that I an doing wrong? I so, please let le know. Thanks for your help.

Have you tried to re-add the printer via Admin > Printers?

No I have not. What printer options are need? I've never had this kind of a problem setting up a printer under linux before. At least wasn't something that was pretty simple to figure out. Any ideas or suggestions would be welcome. Thanks.

Thought I would chime in. 1. Can you print to the printer when connected via usb only? 2. Is the printer connected to the router directly, or is it connected to the Windows machine and then "shared"? I believe the hplip driver will not work with the share option.

1. Yes, I can print to the printer when connected to USB only. (Let me recheck this. Tried so may things I can't remember if this worked or not. I know I unhooked the Window's machine before hooking the direct to USB option. I 'll update when I get the chance.)

2. Printer is connected to windows machine and then shared.

I did notice this morning that the HP printer options did show up until I tried to use it. It then disappears until after a reboot and then it disappears again.

I think that number 2 is you're problem. I know that I have read on the hplip site that it won't work with a Windows shared device. That it had to be connected directly to the network/router. I'll try to track down that documentation and post it here...

In the mean time, try a search for 'hplip widows share' or something similar and see what out there.

Okay, here it is:

hplip.png
Note that it says "use HPIJS only and the SAMBA backend (smb:)". I haven't done that before. I would just connect the printer to the router if possible, if that's not doable then researching HPIJS and samba is the next step.

The instructions for HPIJS are below, under the question, "how do I install HPIJS". But I have no knowledge of how to configure it. It may just work out of the box.

Hope this gets you a little further,

Thank you all for the assistance. This thing is kicking my butt. I am going to have to dig into this a lot deeper. I can't get it to work anyway I have tried. If I figure anything out I'll update the post.

I am still having problems printing. I can I get the HP Officejet 4632 to work with Windows 7 but not LM 17? Printing is fine under Windows. I can't get anything to print when I switch over to LM. Any pointers or suggestions? I need to be able to print from both my Windows and Linux systems. Let me know and I will try to answer any questions as best that I can. Thank you.

I had the same problem with my HP-7520 after I installed Linux Mint 17 (from Mint 13) and Betsy 2. I tried to update hplip to 3.17 without success. I then run Ubuntu 14.04 and my printer worked perfectly. Finally the issue concerns the URI. Under Ubuntu the URI is : hp :/net/Photosmart_7520_series?ip=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the IP address of the printer). Since I made this correction (Printers > HP7520 > Properties > URI), my printer works perfectly and scanning is possible too. :D

My question is : why this difference with Ubuntu ?
