<SOLVED>Brother MFC-9120CN Scanner Installation

Post by TopEnder »

G'Day All, and Thanks in advance,

1. Open "/lib/udev/rules.d/60-libsane.rules" file.
2. Add the following two lines to the end of the device list. (Before the line "# The following rule will disable ..."):
If there is "LABEL="libsane_rules_end"", add the following 2 lines before "LABEL="libsane_rules_end"".

The lines to be added---------------------------

# Brother scanners
ATTRS{idVendor}=="04f9", ENV{libsane_matched}="yes"

3. Restart the OS.

Check to see if there is a “sane” directory in”usr/lib” if not make a dir: mkdir /usr/lib/sane - if the “sane” directory is not there a sane file will be created when copying the following files.

Copy the following files under /usr/lib64/ to /usr/lib/.

cp /usr/lib64/libbrscandec3.so.1.0.0 /usr/lib
cp /usr/lib64/sane/libsane-brother3.so.1.0.7 /usr/lib/sane
cp /usr/lib64/sane/libsane-brother3.so.1 /usr/lib/sane
cp /usr/lib64/sane/libsane-brother3.so /usr/lib/sane
cp /usr/lib64/libbrscandec3.so /usr/lib
cp /usr/lib64/libbrscandec3.so.1 /usr/lib

(I had a problem, there was no “/usr/lib64” & “/usr/lib64/sane” on my Laptop, there for none of the files listed were in these folders to copy to the “/usr/lib” & “/usr/lib/sane”.)

Any help and advice on how to solve this problem would be appreciated. Thanks, Smokey (TopEnder)

Gave up on Linux Mint 18, re-installed Linux Mint Cinnamon 17.3 64bit

chiefjim, No, as I was under the impression that the brscan to use with the MFC-9120CN Printer/Scanner is brscan3. Will reply if required tomorrow as it's past my bedtime. Smokey, (TopEnder)

Finally solved. This printer worked with Cinnamon 17.3 64 bit and I am unable to get it to work in Cinnamon 18 64 bit, works well in KDE 17 64 bit on the same PC.
Manually created a sane folder in /usr/lib, copied files required (see my previous post) and presto the scanner worked in XSane & Simple Scan;

Thanks. I can confirm that this also works for my Brother MFC-490CW network scanner on Mint 18.2 XFCE 64-bit. I couldn't get the OS to see my scanner at all without copying those files.

Good find. I submitted feedback to Brother as well, so maybe they'll patch it on their end at some point.

Brother describe this in their FAQ http://support.brother.com/g/s/id/linux ... edirect=on

as http://support.brother.com/g/s/id/linux ... =on#f00101

the FAQ for Brother has several .. "oh, by the way, remember to do ............" features to get Brother Scanners to be good;
