xsane does not work [SOLVED]

Post by 52ROSt »

LM 17.3 KDE, updated
Scanner EPSON Perfection 1670

On my new installation XSane worked for a few hours, but it was unstable. Sometimes I could make a pre-scan but no scan, sometimes I could make a scan but no pre-san, and sometimes all worked or nothing work.

Now I get always the message:
Failed to open device 'snapscan:libusb:101:031' Invalide argument
I ran lsusb and got:
~ > lsusb
Bus 003 Device 003: ID 058f:9540 Alcor Micro Corp. AU9540 Smartcard Reader
Bus 003 Device 002: ID 8087:8000 Intel Corp.

Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Next I ran xinut and got:
~ > xinput
⎡ Virtual core pointer id=2 [master pointer (3)]
⎜ ↳ Virtual core XTEST pointer id=4 [slave pointer (2)]
⎜ ↳ TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint id=14 [slave pointer (2)]
⎜ ↳ Microsoft Microsoft Wireless Optical Mouse® 1.00 id=9 [slave pointer (2)]
⎜ ↳ SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad id=12 [slave pointer (2)]
⎣ Virtual core keyboard id=3 [master keyboard (2)]
↳ Virtual core XTEST keyboard id=5 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ Power Button id=6 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ Video Bus id=7 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ Sleep Button id=8 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ Integrated Camera id=10 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ AT Translated Set 2 keyboard id=11 [slave keyboard (3)]
↳ ThinkPad Extra Buttons id=13 [slave keyboard (3)]
lsusb shows the EPSON scanner whereas xinput does not.

How do I have to interprete this result?
What can be done to make XSane running?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I wonder if you need the Epson drivers;

one starts here http://download.ebz.epson.net/dsc/searc ... ch/?OSC=LX but when I enter 1670 I get no recognition but with entering Perfection I get entries for the 1660 and 1650 so this driver should be good surely ..

after clicking to accept; and going to the driver download page, one should get this http://support.epson.net/linux/en/iscan ... sion=1.0.4

If you are 64bit, you should end up with iscan-bundle-1.0.4.x64.deb.tar.gz in your Downloads folder

Epson offers an install script; that should do all that is needed; so if you open a terminal; and copy and paste these commands one by one; find paste in the terminal by right-clicking at the prompt ...

cd Downloads
tar -zxvf iscan-bundle-1.0.4.x64.deb.tar.gz
cd iscan-bundle-1.0.4.x64.deb
sudo ./install.sh

and watch the install script as it may ask you questions; perhaps "full-screen" it so you can see .....

@pdc_2
Thanks for looking to deeply into this matter.

I copied and pasted th first 2 commands into the terminal. Unfortunately the 2. command seems to contain an error which, due to my newbie level, cannot identify.

Here is the output of the first two commands:
rost@ThinkCentre-ROSt:~ > cd Downloads
rost@ThinkCentre-ROSt:~/Downloads > tar -zxvf iscan-bundle-1.0.4.x64.deb.tar.gz
tar (child): iscan-bundle-1.0.4.x64.deb.tar.gz: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar (child): Error is not recoverable: exiting now
tar: Child returned status 2
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
rost@ThinkCentre-ROSt:~/Downloads >

Thanks in advance for contining help!

Epson Perfection 1670 needs epson drivers?

Post by pdc_2 »

Hi there 52ROSt

so did you download the file from the Epson site? go to http://support.epson.net/linux/en/iscan ... sion=1.0.4 and click the correct debian package: either 32 or 64bit; when you click to download, if you click on the SAVE option and it should end up in your Downloads directory; you can check it is in the Downloads directory by typing
ls
when you have done the "cd Downloads" as ls stands for list ........ ie list what is in the directory ........ you may as well hear some of these words now ........

of course you can also have a peek at the your Downloads directory from your desktop; look in your home folder is another option; let us know how it goes

@psd_2
Thanks to your additional information, I understood what you meant.

I could install the driver you identified.

Test shows the new driver works but the message is also negative. iscan send:
Could not sent command to scanner. Check the scanner status

This checking made me suddenly aware of something, which I do not remember having seen before. When I plug the USB cable of the scanner into any USB port of any PC, the LED darkens. This is strange because it means that the voltage over the LED drops. To the best of my knowledge a USB port does not draw a current from an attached device but provides a 5 V 0.5 / 0.9 A power supply to an attached device.

Thus, I will see if I can get my scanner fixed and/or buy a new one. About 14 years of service the scanner provided flawlessly.

Hopefully I can get the new scanner up and running myself. I learned from you how to install a driver.

Thanks for teaching and helping!

UPDATE for others who have xsane problems - a few days later
i replaced the scanner by an EPSON GT-F740
Important is to use the LInux driver matching the sanner model. Epson provides a search function here:
Results:
=> Image Scan! for Linux works very well out of the box
=> XSane also work but the temp folder needed disappears after re-booting the machine - no solution yet

Update a few weeks later.
Solution for diappearing temp files: viewtopic.php?f=90&t=240952

Remaining problem in my configuration - details are above: When changing from 8bit to 16bit xsane crashes. I had no time yet to tackle this problem.
