Sorry for the double post but I tried the network area first and got not responses. I am hoping someone in this area can help.
After a lot of help and suggestions from you guys, I have my windows 10, windows 7 and Linux Cinnamon 18.1 all talking to each other!!!!!!!!!!!
Not perfect but definitely workable.
Now, new problem.
I have a brother all in one printer/scanner on set up as a network printer.
I was able to load the drivers and send a print from linux to the printer ... got a test page out.
Two problems ...
1) When I select scan to a file on the printer (it has an LCD screen) then it shows all the computers on the network for me to send the file to. The linux computer does not show up. How do I get it to show up? It has an IP address. Is there somewhere in the linux box I can enter the printer IP so that the printer will recognize it?
2) I have not yet loaded a scanner driver. How or more correctly where do I do this? There does not seem to be a driver to my exact unit but I am one of the brother drivers will work.
The printer/scanner I have is a Brother MFC-J6935DW
Thanks so much ..... Mike

Brother MFC-j6935dw network install scanner
this is a good page to start from http://support.brother.com/g/s/id/linux ... edirect=on
then clicking on network gives you this http://support.brother.com/g/s/id/linux ... edirect=on
and clicking on scanner driver takes you here http://support.brother.com/g/s/id/linux ... edirect=on
........... but your printer isn't listed on this page ..... must not be updated so if you go here http://support.brother.com/g/b/download ... _as&os=128
if you have 64bit, you get the small deb package brscan4-0.4.4-2.amd64.deb ..... you could click to "open" it as it is downloaded, and gdebi installer should leap in and get the install done then you go on to Setting for your network scanner
if you go back to the install instructions for network printer to see all that ........
but the key thing to note at the end is
so that should be
so get the ip address from the screen on the brother ........ some advise setting up a static ip address ...... but if you are happy to go with things as they currently are .......
is that enough to get you started?

Re: how to add network printer / scanner ??????
Sooooooooooooooo close .... just a bit more help please.
OK, so I followed your advice.
Only one hang up. It turns out I need to do a command "brscan-skey" every time I log in or restart the computer. This some how gets the scanner to recognize he computer (after doing this the linux computer pops up on the brother LCD screen).
So, for my two problems ....
1) then I put several sheets into the automatic feeder for scanning, the file that comes out only has the first sheet on in it. When I scan using the windows computer, I get a PDF with multiple pages ( scan 5 pages ... get a file containing 5 pages). Why? One of the reasons I bought this printer/scanner is because of the document feeder. Each week I scan in a handful of pages for reports. How can I get this to work?
2) When I scan in windows, I get a PDF ... when I can in Linux, I get a PNM. What is a PNM? My clients all want PDF's .... is there a way of scanning to a PDF or converting a PNM to PDF?
Thanks so much .... Mike

Re: how to add network printer / scanner ??????
Just for some added information, I found this link but it doesn't make sense to me ...
http://support.brother.com/g/s/id/linux ... t=on#Inst7
I think it is telling me how to change from PNM to PDF ... but I am not sure.
Also I see the note that says multiple pages will be in one PDF file .... exactly what I want.
Also, I tried to find the file ... I went to "file system" ... "usr" .... "local" .... then no "Brother" ...!
I searched for the brscan-skey-(version).cfg file but could not find it.
Thanks ..... Mike

Close but just a bit more help please!
So, I am still a bit lost but I think this page is trying to tell me how to get my brother scanner to give out PDF's rather than PNM files. Plus, the PDF's will give multiple pages in one file (I just needed this ... put 5 pages in the doc feeder and got one PDF file).
Here is the page I think tells me what to do:
http://support.brother.com/g/s/id/linux ... t=on#Inst7
I did manage to find the file that I "think" I need to change on the linux box (scantofile-0.2.4-1.sh).
I will list it below (it is short).
What do I need to change in this this file .... just the ".pnm" half way down the page or is there someting in the brscan file (still have not found this one) or ????????
Any help would be greatly appreciated !!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks ...... Mike

covert files from ADF run to single PDF Brother scan-key or gscan2pdf
there is a small programme called gscan2pdf that has been around since 2009 or so; http://gscan2pdf.sourceforge.net/
install it (and its ppa) with
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:jeffreyratcliffe/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gscan2pdf
...... that gives you the latest (1.7.3 whereas the version in synaptic is not as recent):
I just wonder if that would do what you want ....
this link suggests it now does what you want https://sourceforge.net/p/gscan2pdf/mai ... 2pdf-help/
____________
otherwise there is a bit of homework to do: if one starts here,
http://eumenidae.blogspot.co.nz/2008/07 ... e-103.html ....... it talks about installing....... you have done that .......then modifying scripts: they reside in
and to edit them you would have a look first of all by changing to that directory script with and then the command of list will list what is in there
to edit a script, ....... let's say it is adf_jpg or something you would do ........assuming you have gedit installed as a text editor ............
____________
then there is this post http://www.reign-of-contrast.de/ojo/MFC ... dex-e.html ........ lots of detail ....... but again maybe gscan2pdf may do all this ...........
and this blog .......... http://griechenzicken.blogspot.co.nz/20 ... .html#more ....... following on from the one above, talks about a script to add all the images together from an ADF run ..... into a single pdf ..
...... maybe you get back to us when you have to wade through a little of this

Re: how to add network printer / scanner ??????
Thanks to pdc_2 @ Thu Mar 09, 2017 for basic guidance. I went to the Brother site (https://support.brother.com/g/s/id/linu ... d_scn.html), chose the nearest fit to my not-listed HL-L2380DW (brscan4) and followed through the steps. Looks like I already had the Brother driver installed with my 3rd-party Brother label printer install...but my scanner now shows up in 'Simple Scan' over my home LAN and works fine!
