When the update finally loaded I found that I had lost my wireless HP printer. HPLIP was missing. Had to reload hplip and do a restart, then all OK.

this has been a particularly bad update for some reason.
But it seems to be getting fixed over time.
fstjohn you may also want to install hplip-gui which gives a nice device manager that sits in the tray and you can get a lot of info on your printer
like estimted ink levels and many other functions.
any way glad you got it working.

Late last night I got fed up waiting, and installed 3 .deb files. (I believe I got them from the Ubuntu site);

cups-daemon_2.1.3-4ubuntu0.2
cups-core-drivers_2.1.3-4ubuntu0.2
cups_2.1.3-4ubuntu0.2

Then installed hplip from the repository and everything is good again.

(Edited for a misread bug; please disregard)

Hope this helps someone.

Hi,

I still have the same issue and I have read and tried everything advised in this topic, but none fixed the problem.
I have also checked all my PPA in case, but it doesn't seems it comes from that.

I don't know what to do now ^^

My current error message is :

It seems that the dependencies are (>=2.1.3-4) but the package at least partially contains (2.1.3-4ubuntu0.2) which apt reads as a broken package, so my solution was to find all of the dependencies (cups-daemon, cups-core-drivers, etc) with the 2.1.3-4ubuntu0.2 suffix and install them separately.

The .deb files can be found by a google search (I think I ended up at the Ubuntu site). Install each one and you should be fine.

(Edit; The .deb files can be found at https://ubuntu.pkgs.org/)

This worked for me as well.

glad a temporary solution is emerging;

seems like this issue has been logged as a bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1676307

curiously; over on the Ubuntu forum; it has not been mentioned; that I can see

Cups is completely broken for me.

Code: Select all

apt-get install -f
allowed the update to complete successfully, but since then cups will no longer start.

Same issue... I can't print anything. I tried to fix it up by reinstalling cups but I couldn't :( :(

The thing I don't get is: how can the broken dependency issue around libcups2 be avoided? If I try to uninstall it, I get a list of tons of affected other packages and I'm told I'm about to break my system. So I didn't go down that road. But every other solution I tried, like manually downloading the other packages such as cups-core-daemon etc. fails due to the unmet dependency with libcups2.

Same issue here.
I have tried to install the three dependancies but get the following:-

Code: Select all

The following packages have unmet dependencies.
 cups : Depends: libcups2 (= 2.1.3-4) but 2.1.3-4ubuntu0.2 is to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
If I try to delete libcups2 to reinstall I'm told I'm about to break my system. Don't want to do that. Is there any hope of a solution?

Have you tried

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install -f

The way I was able to fix this was by going to https://ubuntu.pkgs.org and downloading the following files:
cups-daemon_2.1.3-4ubuntu0.2_amd64.deb
cups-core-drivers_2.1.3-4ubuntu0.2_amd64.deb
cups_2.1.3-4ubuntu0.2_amd64.deb

I then installed them not through the terminal, but by simply double-clicking on the downloaded files' icons and letting the package manager install them. I believe you need to install them in the same order listed above (though I'm not 100% positive about the order of the 1st 2).

If you are using an hp printer, as I am, you'll also need to reinstall hplip, which can be found at http://hplipopensource.com (both directions and downloads).

Hope this helps!

libcups2 has been installed as the ubuntu package which apparently is not compatible with the (2.1.3-4) packages. So if you install the other ubuntu packages as sdahlstrom instructs above you will be ok.

-_- It's still borked...
The maintainers know about this?

I'm also having the same problem as these other guys. I think I've tried everything that they have but it still doesn't work.
Being a novice doesn't help either

How do I get rid of 'held packages' pls?

The repos are missing packages, the maintainers rainbows up. I'm surprised it lasts for so long.

Like a previous guy said, you need to install the missing packages manually.

go to https://ubuntu.pkgs.org and download the following files:
cups-daemon_2.1.3-4ubuntu0.2_amd64.deb
cups-core-drivers_2.1.3-4ubuntu0.2_amd64.deb
cups_2.1.3-4ubuntu0.2_amd64.deb

double click on them,to install them.

Thing is I'm not - and I guess some of you other guys have the same issue - allowed to install any of these packages due to unmet dependencies related to libcups2. What to do? Purge libcups2? Tried that but it only gives me an endless array of other unmet dependencies. I'm stuck and in need of my printer again :?

Are you trying to install these .deb files after downloading them and installing them manually from the site quoted?
I suspect you're trying to do it via apt (via synaptic or terminal).

Presumably the libcups2 you have is the 2.1.3-4ubuntu0.2 right?

If so installing the three files would match libcups2 on your system.
