Problems connecting printer after install of Mint Cinnamon 18.1

Post by gevie »

I have recently upgraded to Mint 18.1 Cinnamon and am currently having problems connecting to my printer. The printer is a HP color laser model "Color Laser Jet Pro MFP M177fw". I remember having a problem with it when i upgraded to mint 17 Cinnamon. I had to download and install HPs driver. I forgot how I was finally able to get it working. I have currently downloaded hplip-3.16.7.run which was recommended but am unable to get it to install. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

HP MFP M177FW

Post by pdc_2 »

Not all HP installs are smooth ....... despite the praise of the HP enthusiasts!

so the MFP http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/mo ... 177fw.html seems to need only 3.13.11 of hplip and in 18.1 it is 3.16.3 I think or something like that ....... so you shouldn't need the latest version .. you should be fine with what's in 18.1 ....... BUT ............

___________-

You do seem to need a DRIVER PLUGIN

so from this page http://hplipopensource.com/node/309 which talks about driver plugins

HP say

Code: Select all

Most Linux distributions include HPLIP with their software, but most do not include the plug-in. Therefore, it is a safe practice to run a utility called "hp-setup", which, will install the printer into the CUPS spooler, download, and install the plug-in at the appropriate time.

To install the plug-in using the GUI you can follow these procedures:

1.  Launch a command-line window and enter:

hp-setup
and so that means open a terminal ........ the big black TV screen below ........ if you follow all the other commands on that page? Please get back as and if you need further feedback

The following is what I got after trying hp-setup:

HP MFP M177FW hplio install issues

Post by pdc_2 »

I would suggest

Code: Select all

sudo apt purge hplip
to remove whatever exists there of it ........

I would suggest

Code: Select all

sudo apt install hplip
and that should bring in 3.16 from the ubuntu repositories ........ you need > 3.13 and I would go for the ubuntu as slightly simpler ...........

______________-

from here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HpAllInOne it seems best to do

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install python3-pyqt4
then your report said

Code: Select all

Also, try using interactive (-i) mode.
so then do the hp-setup but as

Code: Select all

hp-setup -i
........ and let's see if things will work for you

Phew Gordy; seems like your system is missing some stuff;

Code: Select all

error: 'libcups2' package is missing/incompatible

error: 'build-essential' package is missing/incompatible
I use synaptic to install programmes: I would plod through it copying each file that is said to be missing; or incompatible; and see what synaptic thinks;

as an alternative to the above ... you can also use the terminal with the format

Code: Select all

dpkg -l libdbus-1-dev
....... we have hplip installed to run an Officejet and I see we don't have libdbus-1-dev installed; and it all seems to work; but your system is certainly spitting the dummy on a lot of things; you can see it never got to the plug-in

Code: Select all

Plug-in Status
--------------
error: Plug-ins need to be installed
________________--

I am also confused because I see references to 3.16.3 .... which is the hplip that comes with Mint 18.1 and it should be fine for your printer;

and then I also see in your printout

Code: Select all

[installation]
date_time = 05/09/2017 07:47:51
version = 3.17.4
and I take the 3.17.4 to mean the latest hplip; that you presumably have installed?

I am not sure where to go here; it all looks very messy; some folks will enthusiastically say HP printers always just work but we have seen quite a few HP issues recently

gevie, I wonder if some of your software repository lists have got screwed up somehow? Please open a terminal, enter inxi -r, and copy/paste the output here.
