[SOLVED] HP Deskjet 3636 not detected

Postby meneer » Sat Oct 07, 2017 1:03 pm

A fresh install of Mint 18.2 AMD64
HP Deskjet 3636, conected via USB cable seemingly not detected by hplip CUPS backend.
MInt's system-config-printer does not list the printer.
http://localhost:631/admin/ "Find New Printers" does not detect the printer.

The installer specified for this printer on HP's website "hplip-3.17.9.run" gives dependency errors. So, I have performed a manual install according to these instructions intended for Mint 17, Python v2...
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/in ... xmint.html

Several posts suggest removing Ubuntu/Mint's hplip first, so I did:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove --purge hplip

The subsequent install process completed without reporting errors, however...

Code: Select all

lsmod | grep usb

...lists nothing.

Code: Select all

lpinfo -v

network beh
direct hp
network ipp
network ipps
network http
network https
network socket
network lpd
network ipp14
network smb
direct hpfax

There are several posts on these forums about HP 3630 series printers but I do not think this is a duplicate.
Perhaps I have missed something really obvious? However, I have wasted several hours on this already, so i hope that someone can help.

so:

1) as I read through your post, the phrase

Code: Select all

lsmod | grep usb
doesn't leap out as a quick test that everyone uses: but you say you get nil; whereas I get a host of feedback from our system: .. so that is curious;

I do wonder if

Code: Select all

lsusb
shows your HP: ....... with the HP plugged in; connected and turned on ........... please tell us the result of that

_________

2) there was a recent thread about the 3637 viewtopic.php?f=51&t=253818 and on a Mint 17 it just needed an update from 3.14 to greater than that; to drive the printer;

I note you say
The installer specified for this printer on HP's website "hplip-3.17.9.run"
; I am not sure what you mean: I would say: what version of hplip is needed to run the 3636; and HP say is only the 3.15version that is needed; so you shouldn't need to install a newer version than was on Mint 18.2 already; http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/mo ... eries.html

Thanks pdc_2 for your reply. I am aware that, as you say, I should not need to install anything, as hplip is included in the Mint install. However. the printer did not work and several posts on various Gnu/Linux forums suggested that installing an updated version might help, so I thought that it was worth a try.

The link from the page you mention, downloads "hplip-3.17.9.run"
You are correct that the same page states: "Minimum HPLIP version 3.15.6"
http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/mo ... eries.html

The outputs from $ lsmod | grep usb ... and $ lsusb ... are both with the printer plugged in, connected and turned on.

Like you, I find it very curious that $ lsmod | grep usb ... does not list anything. Conversely, I plug in a USB flash drive, that is listed. However, the printer is never listed no matter how many times I connect and re-connect it or mess with the settings in:
http://localhost:631/admin/

Any suggestion as to what I should try next?

Hi pdc_2, apologies for the delay. Does this shed any light on the problem, all it tells me is that yes, the printer is connected and turned on, but then I knew that :-)

Code: Select all

lsusb

Re: HP Deskjet 3636 not detected: try hp-check from terminal

Postby pdc_2 » Thu Nov 02, 2017 9:23 pm

I would suggest moving on to following what HP advise in their trouble-shooting steps:

here is their starting pages for troubles https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imag ... leshooting

and on this one https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imag ... leshooting they suggest

Code: Select all

hp-check
from a terminal:

a current thread viewtopic.php?f=49&t=256423 shows interesting missing files when another user runs it.

Problem solved. Unfortunately - in terms of helping anyone else - I am not entirely clear what I did differently this time. However, for anyone with a similar problem, here is what I did...

hp-check revealed dependency issues. The hplip installer is pretty good at fixing these, so,

Download a compatible version of hplip for Mint 18.2
https://sourceforge.net/projects/hplip/ ... ip/3.17.9/

Check that the standard Mint repositories are enables in:
/etc/apt/sources.list
or
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list

Before running the installer, check that you have a working internet connection, in order to download any missing dependencies.

Run the hplip installer:

Code: Select all

chmod +x hplip-3.17.9.run
./hplip-3.17.9.run

I perfomed a CUSTOM install...
Answer yes to any important questions, particularly about fixing missing dependencies and removing any existing install of hplip.

You probably do NOT need to install fax support or GUI, so you can safely answer No to those questions.

Unplug and re-plug the printer's USB cable when requested. The printer "hp-deskjet_3630_series" should be detected at this point.

Print a test page when the installer offers it, if you like. If this prints OK, do not worry about any errors it gives thereafter.

If you accepted the default printer name, you will be able to manage the print queue in the CUPS interface at:
http://localhost:631/printers/DeskJet_3630

If you installed scanner support, test the scanner in "simple-scan" or "Xsane Image scanning program" from "Graphics" in Mint's applications menu.

I hope that this helps someone. Thanks again to pdc_2.
