[SOLVED] Not printing in 18.02
After installing my HP 4500 all in one printer in Cinnamon 18.02 It won't print either a Libreoffice writer doc or a text editor doc.
However it will print the test page from the install printers section.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance. Bob,

Re: Not printing in 18.02
It might (or might not) be helpful to know exactly which printer you have. HP 4500 tells us practically nothing. Looking on HP's printer driver website, I find:
HP Envy 4500 E-all-in-one
HP Designjet 4500mfp
HP Designjet 4500ps
HP OfficeJet 4500 g510n-z All-in-one Printer
HP OfficeJet 4500 All-in-one Printer - k710
several other models of HP OfficeJet 4500 All-in-one Printer
HP DeskJet f4500 All-in-one Printer Series
HP Color LaserJet 4500dn Printer
several other models of HP Color LaserJet 4500 Printer
HP has made a LOT of printers over the years, and just a number like 4500 is seldom adequate to identify a particular model.

Re: Not printing in 18.02
Like I say the install printers found the correct printer and correctly identified it and printed a test page.
But it wouldn't print any documents. It did spit out a blank sheet of paper though. <g>

Re: Not printing in 18.02
if you go to PRINTERS folder; delete the icon for the HP: as it isn't working ...........
then HP suggest https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imag ... leshooting you enter two commands into a terminal ......... the TV screen on the bottom bar .....
.... after typing or copying each command, hit the ENTER key ............
and then
HP say you only need 3.13 of hplip to run your 4500 so the one in 18.02 will be fine: don't waste your time installing the "latest version" !!

Re: Not printing in 18.02
The software available in the software sources is HPLIP version 13.16.3 which I installed.
Still only prints a blank page.
Not sure what all of these missing packages mean as I think I installed everything right.

Re: Not printing in 18.02
well Bob there seem to be a whole pile of things missing; hplip prints a little HP printer on our system; when I run "hp-check" on our system, it says we are missing some things; that to me are installed; so not sure just how many of the missing things are needing to be installed;
if you can use Synaptic ...... a good time to learn if you are not familiar with it ........ then you can look up on synaptic what you have; or don't have; and install it from synaptic;
I see some startling messages
so: summary: you don't seem to be able to print because HPLIP is unhappy: it wants a pile of packages installed; you need to plod through the list and install them one by one; when all done: re-run and see if it is happier;
on linux forums, there are a host of HP enthusiasts who tell you it always just works ...... here we seem to have another exception

Installing CUPS:
sudo apt-get install cups-pdf
When you try to print a document and the Print window appears, are you selecting the correct printer (ex. HP)?

In Software Manager, is the HP Printer Postscript drivers installed?
Printer-driver-postscript-hp
If so, it will have a green check on the icon.
If not, install it via Software Manager
OR
via the Terminal:

Re: Not printing in 18.02
I am have been running an HP Envy 4501 on Mint KDE without any problems for several years.
When setting it up I do not select printer as part of a multi-function device (even though it is) but a printer connected to a USB port. The printer works fine and the scanner is picked up separately by Skanlite. When I selected printer as part of a multi-function device things did not work well for me, even with the correct "driver."

Re: Not printing in 18.02
Think I should first un-install HPLIP? If so what is the code?
Then try installing the printer just using the included 18.2 utility and see if that works.
If not is there a code to check what is missing form that point?
I am familiar with Synaptic package manager and the terminal.
Thanks in advance, Bob.

I installed all of the " missing" packages using Synaptic re-nstalled the printer and I still can't print doc's.pdc_2 wrote:well Bob there seem to be a whole pile of things missing; hplip prints a little HP printer on our system; when I run "hp-check" on our system, it says we are missing some things; that to me are installed; so not sure just how many of the missing things are needing to be installed;
if you can use Synaptic ...... a good time to learn if you are not familiar with it ........ then you can look up on synaptic what you have; or don't have; and install it from synaptic;
I see some startling messages...... so one sort of wonders how CUPS could not be installed in a standard Mint install .........error: cups CUPS - Common Unix Printing System REQUIRED 1.1 - INCOMPAT 'CUPS may not be installed or not running'
so: summary: you don't seem to be able to print because HPLIP is unhappy: it wants a pile of packages installed; you need to plod through the list and install them one by one; when all done: re-runand see if it is happier;Code: Select all
hp-check
on linux forums, there are a host of HP enthusiasts who tell you it always just works ...... here we seem to have another exception
I ran HP check again and found this warning:
HPLIP-Version: HPLIP 3.16.3
HPLIP-Home: /usr/share/hplip
warning: HPLIP-Installation: Auto installation is not supported for linuxmint distro 18.2 version
Current contents of '/etc/hp/hplip.conf' file:
# hplip.conf. Generated from hplip.conf.in by configure.

Sooooo 18.2 is not going to work for me if I can't print...
Is there an easy command line way to remove HPLIP? If so maybe the built in printing utility will work. I am supervised this version of HPLIP is include in the software sources for version 18.0.
Re: Not printing in 18.02
There is a bunch of stuff screwed up there, but who knows why? Did you add a bunch of "outside" repositories to your apt sources? (Post the output ofbobbraz wrote:Sooooo 18.2 is not going to work for me if I can't print...
inxi -r
so we can see what you've got there.) Have you added any PPAs? Did you check the .iso you downloaded before you installed? (Instructions here: https://linuxmint.com/verify.php ) Another question for you: why did you install HPLIP, when all versions of Mint come with HPLIP by default?I think I would be tempted to reinstall, using a verified download .iso.

Install HPLIP Toolbox (hplip-gui)
Installing HPLIP Toolbox is sometimes necessary to get your HP printer or scanner up and running. You can do that as follows:
a. Launch a terminal window.
b. Type (or copy/paste):
sudo apt-get install hplip-gui
---
HPLIP (latest version) HP Linux Imaging and Printing
Print, Scan and Fax Drivers for Linux
https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing
Hope this helps.
Check the condition of your HDD (hard disk drive) and RAM (memory).
If all else fails, I would reinstall LM18.2 as suggested earlier.

Re: Not printing in 18.02
OK. This is nuts.
I borrowed another printer from a friend, installed it through "printers" and it works just fine!!!
I am wondering if the right driver for the HP Envey 4500 was picked during installation.
Looking at the "select from database" in the printer details window I see several drivers that can be selected for that printer.
Any ideas on what should be selected manually?
I do appreciate all of the support I have received so far.
Thanks. Bob.

Your quote:
See this line above: warning: HPLIP-Installation: Auto installation is not supported for linuxmint distro 18.2 version
Manually install HPLIP (the latest version, based on what version of Python is on your system).
https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imag ... /downloads
If your python version is 2.6 or greater, please download this Download Tarball.
https://sourceforge.net/projects/hplip/ ... irror=nchc
To run the installer manually, after extracting the tarball, cd into the 3.17.10 directory (or the download directory) and run hplip-install.
Or, if Python version is 2.5 or less, please download this HPLIP tarball.
https://sourceforge.net/projects/hplip/files/hplip/
then download an older version of HPLIP.
To run the installer manually, after extracting the tarball, cd into the 3.17.10_py2.5 directory (or the download directory) and run hplip-install.

Re: Not printing in 18.02
I have a Canon PIXMA MX340 downstairs, these are the LM18.2 Printer settings.
Connecting to the CUPS Server
https://www.dropbox.com/s/v3bhysml30y6b ... r.png?dl=0
Printer Properties localhost via USB
https://www.dropbox.com/s/lw8kfj8su8o6a ... b.png?dl=0
Printer Properties localhost via WiFi
https://www.dropbox.com/s/u5q4xnnxitsra ... i.png?dl=0
If the CUPS Server is blank, then CUPS needs to be uninstalled/reinstalled.
If Printer Properties localhost via USB or WiFi is blank, I would uninstall/reinstall the HPLIP drivers AFTER installing CUPS.
You may have to enter the Printer settings on the printer itself and let it find your wifi connection, as I had to do and setup the ethernet/wifi settings there.
Hope this helps.

Re: Not printing in 18.02
Try this.
1. HPLIP Remove and Reinstall
First, open a Terminal and do the following, one at a time:
sudo apt-get purge hplip
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install hplip
2. HPLIP Binary Plug-In
https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imag ... lugin.html
Most Linux distributions include HPLIP with their software, but most do not include the plug-in. Therefore, it is a safe practice to run a utility called "hp-setup", which, will install the printer into the CUPS spooler, download, and install the plug-in at the appropriate time.
A. To install the plug-in using the GUI you can follow these procedures:
1. Launch a command-line window and enter:
hp-setup
2. Select your connection type and click "Next".
3. Select your printer from "Selected Devices" list and click "Next".
4. Enter your root password when prompted and click "Next".
5. Use the recommended installation method and click "Next".
6. Check the box to accept with the "Driver Plug-In License Agreement" and click "Next".
7. Finish the installation of the printer as normal, however you may be prompted to re-enter your user name and password.
If you run into any additional install problems you can go to our known issues page and check for a solution.
B. For advanced users who wish to install HPLIP components manually, a utility exists (hp-plugin) which will download and install the plugin file, but it does not also install a printer queue like hp-setup does.
Do the following:
1. Launch a command-line window and enter:
hp-plugin
2. Follow the directions above for navigating the GUI but remember that the printer que will not be installed through this process.
*Note: you may need to run hp-plugin as root or super user depending on your distro.
