[SOLVED] HP OfficeJet 8715 plugged in via USB not detected. Simple Scanner says No Scanners Detected.

Post by James_Smith »

I just updated to LM 18.3 and just got a new printer/scanner (HP OfficeJet Pro 8715).

Last week this computer was LM 18.2 and the printer I had was an HP OfficeJet Pro 8500. It worked fine (via USB cable—I never connected it via WiFi). I didn't have any trouble at all. Now this one is giving me a hard time.

Here's my computer's hw/sw information:

I believe all versions of Mint come with hplip pre-installed.

so I think Mint 18.3 has only hplip 3.16.3 and HP https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imag ... ices/index think the 8715 needs at least 3.16.5 so you had best install the latest (3.17.11 I think it is ..) from here

https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imag ... g/gethplip

and if that doesn't trigger an automatic setup, then

Code: Select all

hp-setup
in a terminal should ..........and if one wants to proceed very thoroughly then run

Code: Select all

hp-check
before the setup command ............

Ok, I'm downloading 3.17.11 now (I'm in the middle of nowhere, so my internet speed is slow) but in the meantime, I decided to open up my update manager to see what updates are available and I got this peculiar message:
W: http://www.openprinting.org/download/pr ... elease.gpg: Signature by key F8897B6F00075648E248B7EC24CBF5474CFD1E2F uses weak digest algorithm (SHA1)

W: The repository 'http://download.opensuse.org/repositori ... untu_16.04 Release' is not signed.
I'm a little busy so I can't focus on it now, but I wanted to put this out there for the troubleshooters of this forum as a possible hint.

And, here's another possible hint: the printer is slooooooooow. Very slow. Slowest printer I've seen since the 1990s. It takes over 7 minutes to print anything. And this isn't just with my Linux machine: I tried it with a Windows 7 machine and a Windows 10 machine and it's consistently over 7 minutes to print anything—and that's using a USB connection.

Thanks for your help. I will return to this thread later today.

Hmmm... I am very confused now.

Well, for one thing, I can't print or scan now. I was able to print one thing the other day just before I made this post. Now it won't print anything. It does print with a Windows 10 computer.

So, I downloaded hplip 3.17.11 as you recommended and saved it to my desktop. As I expected, this
Image
appeared on my desktop.

Being ignorant (and having not carefully read your post), I double-clicked it and it did this...

And then this...

I thought maybe I should run it in Terminal, but that wasn't an option. So then I re-read your post and saw your instructions. Here is what happened when I tried hp-setup:

Code: Select all

mac@iPad-2 ~ $ hp-setup

error: No devices found on bus: usb

Done.
Note: Please ignore where it says iPad. That's a long story. Suffice it to say that this is a Dell Inspiron 13 7378.

When I tried hp-check, this happened:

Code: Select all

mac@iPad-2 ~ $ hp-check
Saving output in log file: /home/mac/hp-check.log

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP
supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies are installed
to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied
package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball has the proper
dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check
both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Check types:

Done.
Note: The HP printer was plugged in via USB when I did hp-setup and hp-check.

Ok, so what should I do? It almost seems like a contradictory message. It says the HP OfficeJet 8710 (of which the 8715 is a subset) is not supported, but it also lists missing dependencies in a way that makes it seem as if I should install them to get this thing to work.

That leads me to the follow question. Should I go to Synaptic Package Manager, find all of the missing packages listed above and install them?
I have been using Linux for years and I am still a newbie

thanks James; so it seems to me you still just have the 3.16.3 version of hplip installed;

so this page from HP suggests how to install hplip https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imag ... tall/index and it's here for completeness;

but if you are happy to copy the commands below; and paste them into a terminal; we should be able to get the new version installed; (to paste into the terminal; if you right-click at the flashing text prompt in the terminal, and look for PASTE in the menu that appears ........)

........... firstly, if we just confirm that 3.16.3 is what is installed; if you paste

Code: Select all

dplg -l hplip
that is asking the computer to LIST what is recorded in Debian package manager about hplip ...... for mine it says
|/ Name Version Architecture Description
+++-=======================-================-================-===================================================
ii hplip 3.16.3+repack0-1 amd64 HP Linux Printing and Imaging System (HPLIP)
_________________
if you get the same, then let's proceed to install the newer version and first command is

Code: Select all

cd Desktop
and if you then type

Code: Select all

ls
... that is asking the computer to LIST what is on the Desktop; there should be hplip-3.17.11.run and if so the command is

Code: Select all

sh hplip-3.17.11.run
and that should start up the install;

___________

we are installing this 3.17.11 version as HP say you need at least 3.16.5 to power your printer; and 3.16.3 is what is on Mint 18.3 as it comes from Ubuntu 16.04

Dude.

DUDE!

Not only did you tell me how to fix it you gave me a deeper understanding of Linux and the command line (which I was just really starting to get into).

Thank you! Send me your address. I'd like to have some flowers and candy delivered to your house.

It still takes between six and eight minutes to print something, but that's an issue with the printer. it does the same thing on Windows 10 and Windows 8.

thanks James; glad to hear it is now printing; 8 minutes seems a tad long; and you say the same happens on windows;
