HP Scanjet 4670 scanner

Post by Jim Hauser » Mon Dec 25, 2017 4:07 am

Hi All:

I have an older scanner that has been sitting beneath my bed for four years. I currently have a working scanner but the HP Scanjet 4670 would be a welcome addition if I could get it to work with Linux Mint KDE 18.3 . With it I can remove the scanning mechanism and scan over-sized images one section at a time. It worked fine under Windows XP but I have had no luck with Mint.

I have searched google and this forum with no luck so far.

I am wondering if I could access it with Windows XP under Virtual Box but have not tried that yet. It is a USB scanner.

I will be fine if there is no resolution but just thought I would ask.

Jim

so 3 possible options:

1) SANE but they say the 4670 is unsupported; http://www.sane-project.org/sane-mfgs.h ... TT-PACKARD
2) hplip .......... it isn't included on the list of supported devices (that are really printers with scanning capabilities..)
3) Vuescan; interestingly where they can support many devices, this is not one of them https://www.hamrick.com/vuescan/hp_scan ... nformation

one could try

Code: Select all

hp-check
in a terminal to see all the dependencies for hplip are in place and then run

Code: Select all

hp-setup
to see if it will recognise the scanner; sounds like a plug-in is needed which one could hope hp-setup would draw in if it can recognise the device;

Thanks pdc 2!

I will try some things later today. Even if I can get that scanner to work with Mint I would still need software to run over-sized scans. So far the only thing available to me is with Windows XP. Perhaps something with Wine or Virtual Box. I do know that Virtual Box has allowed me to access hardware (UPS) with Windows programs in the past but this is not a big issue for me since I already have one working scanner. I was only hoping for over-sized scanning ability.

Just a quick update:

The scanner itself will not initialize on two different machines so it looks like I have a scanner specific problem and not a Linux or Mint problem yet. I do not know if it is worth it for me to pursue the issue and it probably does not belong in this forum yet. As I said before, I already have a working scanner on this system.

Cheers! :-)

Try this:
http://chmil.org/hp4600linux/#compile

Read the entire post from the bottom up to get a good understanding.
Very basic. No options.
Simple 600DPi scan.
Need some compiling but apparently works.
Havent tried it myself just yet.

Let us know if you get it working.

Hi

I'm also owning an 4670 (since years) and I'm also very interested in an solution as I use this scanner for huge scans (lying flat on the ground).
The only way to do so is to boot up an Windows 10 installation with an Vista driver.Every attempt in Linux(Ubuntu starting with version 14.XX to current 16.04) didn't work ...

VueScan will also NOT work unless you have a driver. So my wish would be to get a driver ...
https://github.com/Triften/hp4600 could be worth a try but...It sounds very basic ...

any other idea?

I've searched long and large and that's the only thing I found.
I figure this Triften fellow was also not successful so he resorted to building this basic solution.
I compiled all his sources, ran the executables and they works but as you said, the resulting solution is very very basic.
It produces a 600dpi, full page scan, bmp format with a size of about 100Mb.
No options at all to change this.

I understand the concept of how he created this and can flow thru the logic in his source code but right now the gain for me to create something a bit more flexible is not worth the time I would have to invest in it. If someone with some C coding skills better than mine (mine are next to nil) would be willing to collaborate, then it may be possible to develop a better solution.

For now, I hold on to my old Windows machine just for this scanner.
