[SOLVED] - Epson DS-320 or Epson ES-200

Post by Crusader » Sat Jan 13, 2018 4:26 pm

Hello,

I am exploring the possibility of purchasing either Epson DS-320 or Epson ES-200 duplex color scanner (they are very similar). Besides the technical capabilities of the scanner, the most important aspect of my purchase is the scanner's ability to work effectively with my OS: Mint 18.2 Cinnamon. I current have a ScanSnap S1100 which I can effectively use with Windows only. I have tried using it on Mint 18.2 with very poor results.

Will either/both of my proposed purchases work [really] well with Mint 18.2 Cinnamon? I don't want to log onto Windows each time I want to scan something. I am open to other brands/models of duplex color scanners - as long as they provide superior quality scans (PDF format, primarily) - that is the most important criteria!

Suggestions/feedback will be greatly appreciated.

so Epson on their website list a driver for the DS-320 which is imagescan-bundle-linuxmint-18-1.3.23.x64.deb.tar.gz ....... so it should drive the scanner.

this page http://support.epson.net/linux/en/image ... ion=1.3.23 should show you the various options;

I think you are in a very specialist area: you could also try posting on the Ubuntu forum; the folks there who post on scanners often seem to have senior models of scanners that have just kept working for years; the issue there is will a new version of operating system still work with the senior hardware ..............

Interestingly, the SANE folks list various Epson Document Scanners; such as you are interested in; older models such as the DS-510 are listed as having good support on SANE; so xsane should find the scanner; http://www.sane-project.org/sane-mfgs.html#Z-EPSON

____________________
the option one has with devices that don't have complete support listed; ..... is to join the SANE mailing list; and work with the scanner team to improve the support for your device: you will have the hardware; they can hopefully offer software improvements;

________

the SANE folks rate support for your Fujitsu as good http://www.sane-project.org/sane-mfgs.html#Z-FUJITSU and they say
Letter-size ADF. Hardware provides simplex, 300/600 dpi in color on USB power. Software creates other resolutions, plus grayscale and binary modes. All buttons and sensors are exposed. Scanner always scans in _triplex_ color, fast USB required.

Senior hardware? I believe the Epson DS-320 and 200 just came out last year.

They both look like good scanners, but I wouldn't count on:

if there's lots of graphics in your scans. The maximum optical resolution is 600 dpi (1200 dpi is digital).

The auto-feed feature is nice to have and you do have the option of powering it with an AC adapter or using USB (another nice feature if you're on-the-go).

As for compatibility, I don't think you'll have a problem. I have an all-in-one Epson (wireless) and have it working well!

pdc_2 and JerryF, thank you for the support!

pdc_2, you found the "secret" I missed: DS-320 working with Linux Mint. I am wondering if ES-200 also works with LInux MInt.

JerryF, you are right: DS-320 was released in early 2017. ES-200 is ES-300W's older sister - lacking WiFi and battery power - the only 2 (major) differences. Most of my scans will be text: hopefully, I should have little to worry about - quality wise.

I will mark this post as solved.

.... that was what I said ........

........ meaning that ... folks who post on standalone scanners often have senior models .. ie Epson Perfection V40 and the like .......... they are the people who comment on standalone scanners ........ that somehow morphed into how recently I felt the DS-320 was released!! ........
