scangearmp2 on Mint 17 with Pixma TS5150, only very basic interface

Post by bjornmu » Mon Jan 29, 2018 3:30 am

I have installed scangearmp2 (version 3.50) on my Mint 17 box and am able to connect to my Canon Pixma TS5150. But the tool only gives me the very basic options. I can choose color or gray scale, page size and output as JPEG or PDF but that's it. It will only let me scan the entire page in the default 300 dpi.

If I start it from xsane (directly or via gimp) I do get a preview but any attempt to mark an area to scan is ignored. Only resolutions up to 300 dpi are shown (the scanner should support up to 1200x2400) and again, it will only scan the whole page in 300 dpi. :?

What gives? I have seen screenshots with a much more elaborate interface. Why am I not getting this? Do I need a newer Mint? BTW I am running 32-bit even though the box is 64-bit, I downloaded the wrong version by mistake. :oops: But I don't know if that's relevant. I never got any warning about missing libraries or anything like that.

so greetings Bjorn;

so with linux, there is choice:

1) Canon supply ScanGearMP;
2) the hard-working volunteers work away for zero pay developing SANE; the open-source backend for scanning;
3) the Hamrick offer VueScan; https://www.hamrick.com/vuescan/canon_t ... nformation

folks often say that linux is free; and some clarify that saying ..... yes .......... free as in speech ........... NOT ........... free as in beer; so there are a number of products (of very high-quality) that support linux; .... where those that supply them ask for a contribution ....... so they can put food on the table ..........

so ..
1) ScanGearMP is as you find it
2) the hard-working volunteers at SANE offer the stable version in the repos; and they offer a development version; if you check out the stable version; http://www.sane-project.org/sane-mfgs.html#Z-CANON the TS5000 series is listed as untested! and the development version listes your TS5000series as having good support; http://www.sane-project.org/lists/sane- ... ml#Z-CANON ...... so whatever you are using is somewhere in between I suspect; you could add the latest SANE by adding the Rolf Bensch ppa to your list of ppas; https://launchpad.net/~rolfbensch/+arch ... u/sane-git and following the instructions; that might enhance things for you; I think we need to be very grateful to such folks for all the work that they put in (The Rolf Bensch ppa is where the sane developers lodge their latest releases; you can rely on it as much as anything in linux).
3) VueScan is available as a free trial; and the full version can be purchased; those that use it always speak very highly of it; so you might wish to treat yourself to a very high quality product that is very well supported; go on; you know you deserve it

You are fortunate to have a very fine scanner/printer that is recent; so the developers work hard to keep up with these innovations; keep enjoying it; reviews speak very highly of what you own

Thanks for the tip, I installed the latest sane backend but it made no difference. I suspect it's the scangearmp2 driver that sets the limits. The screenshots I have seen was from the tool that came with it but mine has no preview windows, menus or other fancy stuff, just a handful of buttons. Ah well, as long as the printer works (which is most important) I can wait until I replace my older desktop with a new one and install Mint 19 after that comes out.

thanks Bjorn; you can look forward to Mint 19 in July; and bright, long summer days too!

So I get the sense that you feel that scangear is working when Simple Scan is working; that ain't so; as I understand it; the 2 are separate

________

can I suggest you join the SANE mailing list; http://lists.alioth.debian.org/mailman/ ... sane-devel and see if the developers would like some help to enhance the support for the TS5000series; you have the hardware; they do the software;
