Epson ET-2650 not working (I searched and tried)

Post by gdpsuz1982 »

Hi,

Running Linux Mint 17.2 on a Dell Inspiron 660 i5-3330 processor (64 bit) for some time and very happy with that.
Was able to install HP printer couple of years ago and now bought an Epson ET-2650...

Was very confident of being able to quickly show my wife what a good printer that would be, but can't get it up and running in Mint.

1) I went to the Epson page and installed the .deb package (2nd choice from below Epson drivers from their website
http://download.ebz.epson.net/dsc/du/02 ... a473c292af

is this the correct driver for my device ?

epson-inkjet-printer-escpr-1.6.18-1lsb3.2.i486.rpm 3.28 MB
epson-inkjet-printer-escpr_1.6.18-1lsb3.2_i386.deb 3.71 MB
epson-inkjet-printer-escpr-1.6.18-1lsb3.2.x86_64.rpm 3.28 MB
epson-inkjet-printer-escpr_1.6.18-1lsb3.2_amd64.deb 3.74 MB
epson-inkjet-printer-escpr-1.6.18-1lsb3.2.src.rpm 3.47 MB
epson-inkjet-printer-escpr-1.6.18-1lsb3.2.tar.gz 3.73 MB

2) My computer found the printer and the installation of the driver went OK. If I go to the 'print manager' then I can ask to print a test page, but 'crap' comes out...

If I try to print a normal text file (one page of libreoffice-writer document) it prints multiple pages of garbage (strange signs like '€@...' in the left margin, page after page until I cancel the job).

So this seems like a driver issue, problem is that I searched the forum and web and have tried all proposed solutions.

I must admit that I connected the printer via USB to the computer BEFORE I installed the driver...maybe the printer is using the wrong driver ?

any suggestions ?
don't want to go back to Windows (my wife suggests this everytime something in Linux seems difficult to her compared to Windows) after all these happy Linux years just because of this...

greetz from Belgium
best regards
Gert

so Gert you say you have a 64bit Mint install; so I would say the correct package is the 64bit package from Epson: the epson-inkjet-printer-escpr_1.6.18-1lsb3.2_amd64.deb

You seem to have installed the 32bit package; (i386)

so if you delete the 32bit package; 1) open up synaptic; find it there; select to delete then go the site you quote and download and install the 64bit package; or 2) you could delete from the terminal but maybe 1) is good

______________________________

to get a printer working one needs to do two things: 1) install the driver and 2) register it with lpadmin; Canon and Brother provide install scripts for their printers; so both steps should be covered; Epson just provide the driver but Mint should recognise the new device and ensure registration: or one opens the PRINTERS folder; clicks the ADD button top-left; and Mint should then find the printer and register it;

we hope all goes well

where can I check my 64bit install ?

I know my computer is a 64bit one, but I'm not sure if by consequence, I have a 64bit installation of Mint

I thought that the 64AMD referred to the type of processor (amd) and that the 'i' referred to the Intel processors (I seem to have the last one).

Yesterday I tried to delete everything and restart all over, but I got an error message when installing the .deb package : "cache defect" it said in Dutch (most probably same in English :-))

Will try your above suggestions this evening and report the status !

thanks so far
best regards

Gert

I can print text and pictures now...Mint recognizes not only the printer but also prints as expected :D

Still have not found where I can change settings like 'dpi'...it seems stuck at 300 x 300 when I look via 'printer settings' ...one setting that cannot be changed
as if there is no other option...

High quality pictures are also printed in that 'low' detail setting...any suggestions ?

But, a promise is a promise...the driver issue is gone so the free brewery tour is still on the table...you can send me PM to set a date !

glad to hear the printer is working; that is a driver from Epson that covers many different machines; so perhaps not a "Formula 1" driver;

to find out if you have 64bit system, if you type

Code: Select all

uname -a
in a terminal; you should see at the end of printout something like
UTC 2018 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
...... the 64 to me signifying 64bit system

...... as in here ............ https://www.fastwebhost.in/blog/how-to- ... or-64-bit/

-___________________

your ET-2650 is airprint-compatible https://support.apple.com/en-nz/HT201311

Ubuntu offered it in 17.04 but as Mint only uses LTS from Ubuntu now, it will be April before 18.04 comes out; and likely July till Mint 19 is released; but if you upgrade then, you should see a "driverless" option for the 2650 and that should mean airprint so interesting if that offers more options;

___________

another option is that the good folks at Turboprint support your printer; http://www.zedonet.com/en_p_turboprint_ ... ank_ET2650 and offer very high dpi printouts; they ask for a contribution; but they offer very good drivers; maybe you could do a deal with them for a brewery visit! I think they are over the border from you!

____________
to alter the dpi, I think you need to edit the ppd file; ( you can find it in usr/share/cups/model) and for example our Canon MG says
*Resolution 600dpi/600 dpi: "<</HWResolution[600 600]>>setpagedevice"
so that is all it is set up for: you can google on if one can edit and how to; here is an article though on dpi https://www.andrewdaceyphotography.com/articles/dpi/ ..... more complicated than we might think

....... see this post from 2010 ........ all seems hard .......... https://askubuntu.com/questions/13641/h ... -with-cups

I have downloaded the evaluation copy of the Turboprint driver, and that's really like being the driver of a Porsche...
Everything is possible, understandable, ...

compared to the standard driver on the Epson webpage, this is a HUGE difference, maybe even a difference that would make a 30 EUR contribution worthwile
(because I cannot imagine someone mailing me a license key for FREE  )

I do think it is sad that Epson only delivered such a 'basic' driver that can only print straightforward in one single dpi setting, compared to the Turboprint where really anything is possible...
and that's a bit the Linux problem, because I got acquainted with the feeling that everything is out there, and for free...

I guess it is unethical to ask how an evaluation copy works ?

suppose I want to evaluate Turboprint for another 30 days...can I reset the 'counter' somewhere in Mint ? how does that work ?

Epson ET-2650 and Turboprint

Gert: I must have missed your post a week ago;

I think it is worth saying that folks say ...... that linux is free ..... as in speech .......... you can read the code and you can change it ..........

but folks say it is not the assumption that it is ....... free ...... as in beer ............

_______
Red Hat make money from linux: you can read the code ... because much of what is Fedora has come from Red Hat .......... but they charge for the support and services they give ... we all need to put food on the table .......

This printer has just been added to the Official Epson support repository.

See my thread.

viewtopic.php?f=51&t=265873

I saw your printer in the list of supported printers.

I have owned an Epson ET-2550 multi-function printer for two years.

But until 3/20/2018 Epson did not support a driver for Linux....
but they do now: http://download.ebz.epson.net/dsc/searc ... archModule

The actual driver came from this page; http://download.ebz.epson.net/dsc/du/02 ... a0dff00719

I just installed it, and it works perfectly.
