[SOLVED] Canon MG2522 recognized but no print output

Post by Ozo » Fri Feb 09, 2018 5:33 pm

I just bought this cheap printer ($25 @ Walmart) for a neighbor but even though it seems to be recognized it will not print. I see it in Printers. I do not see it in the queue.

It scans OK and prints that result out but...

I got this;

user@Bott9 ~ $ ping -c4 lp1

so you are using Mint? Which version please? ..... and this printer is set up wirelessly; and you are happy it is all good; Canon supply this guide https://www.canon.co.uk/support/consume ... ion_setup/ for anyone else following who wants to set up a similar wireless device

when it says MG2500-series, I am guessing that is using the open print driver gutenprint;

Canon do supply drivers; so you could quickly install them, and see if they help: if you go here, and click to download and save, you will be downloading cnijfilter-mg2500series-4.00-1-deb.tar.gz

By default, it should end up in your Downloads directory, so if you open a terminal and copy each command below; and paste each command into the terminal; .....hitting the enter key ........

Code: Select all

cd Downloads

Code: Select all

tar -zxvf cnijfilter-mg2500series-4.00-1-deb.tar.gz

Code: Select all

cd cnijfilter-mg2500series-4.00-1-deb
and then one runs the install script that should 1) install the drivers and 2) register the printer with lpadmin; if you watch the terminal, as it may ask some questions ..

Code: Select all

sudo ./install.sh
any joy?

so first thing is we need to know the printer can talk to the router; if you want it to be wireless;

..... and I am just not clear if you are happy that is all done and going well; the Canon guide talks about the WPS method; where you basically drop the defences on the router by pressing its WPS button; then you broadcast from the Canon and it gets accepted;

I am not clear what you have done when you say
No joy
..... if you could bear to plug a usb cable in, that is often easier ...........

I am not interested in wireless. I have a cable. MG2522 is not a wireless printer. No joy means I got this when I entered the second line of text you suggested.

er@Bott9 ~ $ tar -zxvf cnijfilter-mg2500series-4.00-1-deb.tar.gz

that's great that you are using a usb cable; .......... but please tell us how the HP is connected; as two usb printers can sometimes be an issue ..........

___________________________

so you downloaded cnijfilter-mg2500series-4.00-1-deb.tar.gz from the Canon website; and selected save?

_______________________

If so, 2 possibilities here I guess;
1) you didn't do the first command of

Code: Select all

cd Downloads
before the tar command was issued or
2) the package we need; cnijfilter-mg2500series-4.00-1-deb.tar.gz; is not in your Downloads folder; by default, a standard Mint setup has Downloads as the place where downloads are saved to;

so if you issue the command

Code: Select all

locate cnijfilter-mg2500series-4.00-1-deb.tar.gz
please; that should help us find where this package is; if you can copy the result from the terminal please; and paste it back here

so if we go from there, and I can suggest some more commands when we find cnijfilter-mg2500series-4.00-1-deb.tar.gz

I disconnected the second printer and reset but still when I press print on the print set up screen it winks out but does not appear in the queue. :(

If this is a failed printer I can take it back to Walmart and get another but will give it a couple of more days to see if it is not a failed printer. :)

I did get this when I tried to get those drivers you suggested;

user@Bott9 ~ $ cnijfilter-mg2500series-4.00-1-deb.tar.gz
cnijfilter-mg2500series-4.00-1-deb.tar.gz: command not found

I loaded the printer manually and now I see the test print jobs in the queue as completed but they did not print. Regular print jobs show up there but as Stopped.. I will keep trying different drivers from the list.

I just reloaded the printer and now it displays regular print jobs as completed but there is no actual printing done. Making some headway.

I have been doing some research and it seems drivers for Canon printers like this are real hard to find and so are not a recommended printer for Linux. I am taking it back and have ordered a Brother MFC-J480DW which is a wireless ink jet all-in-one printer (copy, scan, and fax). The generic ink cartridges are very low priced which was a primary consideration in picking this brand. If you do photos you should use waterproof ink but that is more money. I got that shipped new with total price $69 US. :D

great; then if you copy each command below; and paste into a terminal please

Code: Select all

cd Downloads

Code: Select all

tar -zxvf cnijfilter-mg2500series-4.00-1-deb.tar.gz

Code: Select all

cd cnijfilter-mg2500series-4.00-1-deb
now you are ready to run the install script; so

Code: Select all

sudo ./install.sh
do watch the terminal as it runs; it should ask some questions of you ...........

and if the MG2522 is usb-connected; and the only usb printer connected; it should be found; and get connected;

if you delete any existing entries for the MG from your PRINTERS folder before you run the above; ...... if they don't work, best perhaps to delete them

At the second line of text I get;

user@Bott9 ~ $ tar -zxvf cnijfilter-mg2500series-4.00-1-deb.tar.gz
tar (child): cnijfilter-mg2500series-4.00-1-deb.tar.gz: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar (child): Error is not recoverable: exiting now
tar: Child returned status 2
tar: Error is n

So then I stopped.

so you said cnijfilter-mg2500series-4.00-1-deb.tar.gz is in your Downloads folder ......and to me; that error message is saying: sorry; that package ain't in the Downloads folder; but let's check again .......

so if you open a terminal; then do

Code: Select all

cd Downloads
then please copy the short command below; and paste into the terminal;

Code: Select all

ls
. that command is asking your system to LIST what is in the Downloads folder; ........ so it is the letters l and s ...... do you see cnijfilter-mg2500series-4.00-1-deb.tar.gz listed there?

If not, issue the command

Code: Select all

locate cnijfilter-mg2500series-4.00-1-deb.tar.gz
and please copy the result; and paste it back here; thanks
