Canon MG2400 Pixma scanner not working -Solved

Post by londrioca »

LM 17.3
scangearmp2 3.20-1
simplescan 3.12.3
xsane 0.998 5ubuntu1
sane 1.014-9

There's a lot of people having trouble with linux & Canon scanners but I can't find an answer that works for me. None of the above detects the scanner although printer works OK. I used to be able to scan using scangearmp but an update seems to have put paid to that, now if I use scangearmp2 i just get "Cannot find available scanners". All suggestions gratefully received.

so if I were using ScanGearMP from Canon; I would start here http://support-asia.canon-asia.com/cont ... 51701.html

and click to download and save what would be scangearmp-mg2400series-2.20-1-deb.tar.gz so if you copy this command;

Code: Select all

dpkg -l scangear*
and paste it into a terminal; copy the result; paste it back here please

I see you quote scangearmp2 ........ I feel that would be wrong driver ..................

___________

SANE: the open-source support for scanning in linux ..... say your device should have full support;

you could well install the latest version of SANE from here https://launchpad.net/~rolfbensch/+arch ... u/sane-git

_____________

so Simple Scan is open-source and drives SANE; the open-source backend

_______

ScanGearMP from Canon is a separate programme; with no relation to Simple Scan .......... in the way that LibreOffice is different from AbiWord ...........

please ask for explanations for anything that I have left unclear .........

Code: Select all

No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation
which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).

scangearmp-mg2400series-2.20-1-deb.tar.gz is unextracted in Downloads

Code: Select all

~ $ dpkg -l scangear*
Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
| Status=Not/Inst/Conf-files/Unpacked/halF-conf/Half-inst/trig-aWait/Trig-pend
|/ Err?=(none)/Reinst-required (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)
||/ Name           Version      Architecture Description
+++-==============-============-============-=================================
un  scangearmp-com <none>       <none>       (no description available)
un  scangearmp-com <none>       <none>       (no description available)
rc scangearmp-com 2.10-33~rari amd64 ScanGear MP for Linux.
ii scangearmp2 3.20-1 amd64 ScanGear MP for Linux.
So I extracted it & tried to install, but got various error messages

Error; Dependency is not satisfiable: scangearmp-common (>=2.20)

So I installed scangearmp-common & tried again:

Failed to satisfy all dependencies (broken cache)
To fix this run 'sudo apt-get install -f' in a terminal window (tried install again, didn't make any difference)

I then tried sane & added Rolf Bensch ppa:

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:rolfbensch/sane-git
sudo apt-get update
In synaptic these files now appear:
libsane 1.0.23-3ubuntu3.1
libsane:i386
libsane-common
libsane-dbg
libsane-deb

The icon on 1st, 3rd, 5th of these is grey with exclamation mark, the others are not installed.

so it would seem you have a couple of differing versions of (the wrong ...) version of ScanGearMP

........ if you wish to resolve this, if you open SYNAPTIC and delete what you have ......

______________-

to install the correct version .......... scangearmp-mg2400series-2.20-1-deb.tar.gz

one would be best to use the install script that Canon supply so the commands would be

Code: Select all

cd Downloads

Code: Select all

tar -zxvf scangearmp-mg2400series-2.20-1-deb.tar.gz

Code: Select all

cd scangearmp-mg2400series-2.20-1-deb

Code: Select all

sudo ./install.sh

I tried that:

Code: Select all

 ~/Downloads/scangearmp-mg2400series-2.20-1-deb $ sudo ./install.sh

but scangear doesn't appear in the menu, Synaptic shows nothing installed, invoking scangear in terminal results in same old
cannot find available scanners

Command for the launcher is

Code: Select all

scangearmp
Edit: With newer scanners the command is scangearmp2, but in MG2400 the command is scangearmp

for this version of ScanGearMP, I would suggest you do

Code: Select all

scangearmp
in a terminal;

that should load it .......

to set it up with a launcher, if you are using Mate; right-click on bottom bar; select CUSTOM launcher ..... as per launcher1 screenshot

then fill on the icon that appears ..... as in launcher 2 screenshot ....... command must be

Code: Select all

scangearmp
...... rest is up to you ........... you can spend hours happily finding the right .png to adorn it with ............ as the image

Actually I meant to say I used scangearmp, however another problem presented itself, after rebooting I then got 'Failed to start the X server' message, no idea why. I had to login with a previous Linux Mint version, eventually repaired problem in compatability mode & now scangearmp works.

Do you mean previous kernel or Mint 13 or 16?
