<Solved> Printer sends data to printer but ... and duplex disabled (unlike Win)
I installed the driver from Brother. Ran a test page, it didn't print. Also, duplex printing disabled. No such problem with Windows on the same PC. What steps to take to troubleshoot? How can I verify it is indeed the right driver that is installed?

Brother HL-2230 install using install script
can I suggest you go to the PRINTERS folder and delete what is there; as you say it does not work;
if you go here http://support.brother.com/g/b/download ... &type3=625 and SAVE what is linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.0-1.gz
it should end up in your Downloads folder; if you open a terminal; the TV screen on the bottom toolbar; and to paste into it, if you right-click at the flashing text prompt, you get a menu option and PASTE should be there;
then if you paste the commands below; line by line; into the terminal; hit the ENTER key;
and if you watch the terminal as the install script runs; do things run any differently?
(for a usb connection, one says no when it asks to specify device URI)
I see the specs for this device http://support.brother.com/g/b/spec.asp ... =hl2230_us say

Re: Brother HL-2230 install using install script
That appears to have worked. Have yet to check about duplex before marking this post <SOLVED>But I'll do again exactly what you suggest.

Brother HL-2230 works well with Brother install script
great; well done;
Re: Printer sends data to printer but ... and duplex disabled (unlike Win)
I spoke a bit fast. Installing the driver worked, but printing jobs remain in the queue forever. The printer is on and connected.
PS: duplex is allowed.

Re: Printer sends data to printer but ... and duplex disabled (unlike Win)
As to "Waiting for the printer to become available"; have you simply tried power-cycling it? I would switch off the printer, reboot Mint, turn on the printer and retest. Also, try a USB2 port if now in a USB3 one: have noticed more USB3 issues on this forum with the standard 18.3 kernel.
Also, in regards to another post above that links to HL-L2320 specs: the D of his HL-L2320D indeed means an actual duplexer. You say "PS: duplex is allowed". Are you talking about "Printer Options -> Duplex: DuplexTumble / DuplexNoTumble / None"? "Job Options" might also be worth checking.

Re: Printer sends data to printer but ... and duplex disabled (unlike Win)
Of the suggested remedies in the last post I tried all, including switching between USB ports. But it doesn'work. Either queued forever or shows "completed" but nothing gets printed. No such problems in Windows.
Printer's properties in Windows.

Re: Printer sends data to printer but ... and duplex disabled (unlike Win)
If the printer works fine on Widows, but not on Linux, would it work through Wine?

another user viewtopic.php?f=53&t=268329 reports
for what they call "practically unlimited logging of failed jobs."
they suggest to see the error file one runs the command

another thing you might consider is contacting TurboPrint http://www.turboprint.info/printers_Brother.html
they do not list your 2320D but they have a feedback form; if they did add the 2320, they offer a 30 day evaluation of Turboprint; all features enabled; (they seem happy with duplex on the 2280D http://www.turboprint.info/printer_Brot ... 280DW.html)
Ubuntu provide a printing error wiki https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems and in the debug section https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrinti ... _error_log they suggest to commandthe print job hangs in the print queue

Unsuspectingly found the test pages in the printer's tray. Printed again, worked.
