1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies

My first choice when this happens it to totally delete the driver for the printer involved.

Then I go back to the manufacturer and get the latest driver and install that.
This will usually replace those missing dependencies.

FWIW, HP is now supporting Epson printer drivers... and Epson just released new updated drivers ~March 2018.

For 2 years I was unable to use our Epson color printer, but Epson has now released a new generic ESC coded driver that works for a whole lot of printers out there....

Thanks I tried running hplip 3.18.4 and wouldn't work.
This printer was supported since 3.16.15.
Linux 18.3 is not supported.
FWIW helpers.

Hello and Welcome to Linux Mint Forums,
here's what I would do.
go to a terminal and they this code:

Code: Select all

sudo apt purge hplip
when that finishes do the following:

Code: Select all

sudo apt install hplip-gui

when that is finished open the menu in the search box enter

Code: Select all

hplip toolbox
click on that and install the printer via this gui app.
Just follow the instruction. If this is a wireless printer you may have to manually supply the ip address. but most of the time it will be found.
once it is installed print a test page.
Good Luck.

Re: hplip troubles HP Office Jet Pro 8710 quit working

Post by pdc_2 »

so Jon when I read the results in your very first post of

Code: Select all

hp-check
, I saw
error: cups CUPS - Common Unix Printing System REQUIRED 1.1 - INCOMPAT 'CUPS may not be installed or not running'
error: dbus DBus - Message bus system REQUIRED - 1.10.6 MISSING 'DBUS may not be installed or not running'
so seems to me from that; that CUPS has disappeared; if you paste the command

Code: Select all

lpinfo -v
into a terminal it may be a useful command; and

Code: Select all

dpkg -l cups*
asks the system to tell you all the various components of cups that are installed; eg for ours we get
ii cups 2.1.3-4ubunt amd64 Common UNIX Printing System(tm) -
ii cups-browsed 1.8.3-2ubunt amd64 OpenPrinting CUPS Filters - cups-
ii cups-bsd 2.1.3-4ubunt amd64 Common UNIX Printing System(tm) -
ii cups-client 2.1.3-4ubunt amd64 Common UNIX Printing System(tm) -
ii cups-common 2.1.3-4ubunt all Common UNIX Printing System(tm) -
ii cups-core-driv 2.1.3-4ubunt amd64 Common UNIX Printing System(tm) -
ii cups-daemon 2.1.3-4ubunt amd64 Common UNIX Printing System(tm) -
ii cups-filters 1.8.3-2ubunt amd64 OpenPrinting CUPS Filters - Main
ii cups-filters-c 1.8.3-2ubunt amd64 OpenPrinting CUPS Filters - PPD-l
........ and more

HP Office Jet Pro 8710 quit working

Post by pdc_2 »

so cups is there; and lpinfo -v sees the printer; I see HP think it needed at last 3.16.5 of hplip; whereas 16.04 only came out with 3.16.3 so you always would have needed least 3.16.5

________
to install a newer version of hplip; over the existing one; can cause issues it seems; from here viewtopic.php?f=49&t=252338#p1357488

Karlchen said he did three things
1) Before re-installing HPLIP 3.16.11 from scratch, used Synaptic to make sure the following packages had been uninstalled:
+ libsane-hpaio
+ hplip-data, hplip-doc, hplip-gui, hplip
(all version 3.16.3+repack0-1)

2) Next uninstalled HPLIP 3.16.11 completely by executing

Code: Select all

sudo /usr/bin/hp-uninstall
3) install the newer version now previous versions purged

________

if you do

Code: Select all

dpkg -l hplip*
in a terminal, what do you get please? This again asks the system to list

hplip troubles

Post by pdc_2 »

so I am seeing that you have 3.16.3 installed; and HP say you need at least 3.16.5 so I would say you need the latest version; as it is easiest to source that; it is 3.18.4 and you get it from here https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imag ... g/gethplip

If 3.16.3 is back to being the installed version, they you need to go through the previous purge instructions; then go for 3.18.4 as the new one to install

install instructions are here https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imag ... tall/index

(they talk of it arriving into your Desktop when you click to download and SAVE; I would have thought it would end up in Downloads; as Mint has that as the default place to save downloaded packages;)

so my guess would be the install instructions would be after downloading and saving 3.18.4

Code: Select all

cd Downloads

Code: Select all

sh hplip-3.18.4.run
and best delete the hplip-gui from 3.16.3 as well; so no conflict; most folks seem fine without the gui
