Hello:
I got this printer working and printing on my OS (Mint 18.3) but it does not scan. Probably I did not install the driver for that? I installed something (something called .deb using the Terminal) from the brother webpage and it prints well.
I am pretty new to Linux.
Thanks so much for any help.

Re: Brother mfc-j4510 does not scan
look again at the Brother site... most have a separate scanner package to install.

Re: Brother mfc-j4510 does not scan
the scanners on Brother need several little steps to attempt to get them working;
so I would suggest you run their Install Tool; as it should do what you need; it should recognise you already have the printer drivers installed; and just do the scanner; if it duplicates the printer icon; just delete one from the PRINTERS folder;
so go here http://support.brother.com/g/b/download ... dlang=true
and click to download and SAVE what will be linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.0-1.gz
Open a terminal; copy each command below; paste into the terminal; hit the ENTER key; move to next command
Please ask if you need help on any of this: hopefully the install tool will cover the 3-4 points you need to cover; to get the scanner going: is it wireless?
