Brother printer HL 2140 will not stop printing SOLVED

Post by hartstephen »

I have a Linux 18.3 Mint Sylvia Cinnamon machine.
Installed on the Linux computer is a Brother HL 2104 printer.When I print from my Windows 10 machine, all is good.The two machines share a ethernet switch. I actually finally got to share a printer...YA!!!

When I print from the linux computer the printer won't stop printing. When I check the printer job it calls for 1 copy yet it keeps on printing until I pull the power cord on the computer.

There must be a command line entry. But I am in the dark here.
Your help here would be greatly appreciated.

Brother printer HL 2140

Post by pdc_2 »

Hi Stephen;

1) how did you install the driver for this please?

2) If you start from menu at bottom left; up to the ADMINISTRATION folder; then to the PRINTERS folder; if you right-click on the icon for the 2140; (there is only one icon, is that correct?) so right-click and select the top option; PROPERTIES

in the settings window; on the right of the dialogue box for that; that opens;

go down to MAKE & MODEL; if you drag the window to the right; so you can see all the text; can you copy what is there; and paste it back here please

wild guesses...
1. there is a printer buffer in your system, maybe it is trying to print bunches of failed attempts of trying to connect with the printer. look for a buffer in your system.
2. shutting the printer down should clear it's buffer, but maybe you need to do that from the control panel on the printer.

PS: Brother has a set of Linux drivers and installation instructions for the individual models on their website.

Brother printer HL 2140 should work with Brother drivers

Post by pdc_2 »

So Stephen: you have a Brother printer; and Brother release drivers for their printers; as they have the machines to practice on, that seems to give them an edge;

in the linux world, many good souls have provided drivers: so what was the Gutenprint Project: to provide drivers to support as many machines as possible; has worked hard and diligently;

______

so the foomatic result from your machine means to me that you have open source drivers;

can I suggest you instead try the Brother driver; they offer an install tool: that should do 1) the installing of the drivers and 2) the registering of the printer on lpadmin: the admin for lp (linux printing on your machine);

before that: you will need to PASTE some commands into a terminal;

the terminal is the black tv screen on the bottom toolbar; so practice opening it; and to paste into the terminal; right-click at the text prompt: the flashing light in the terminal; look for PASTE in the menu that appears .......

so go here http://support.brother.com/g/b/download ... &type3=625 and click to download and SAVE what will be linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.0-1.gz

open the terminal; copy each command below; line by line; paste into the terminal; hit the ENTER key .... repeat .......

Code: Select all

cd Downloads

Code: Select all

gunzip linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.0-1.gz

Code: Select all

sudo bash linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.0-1 HL-2140
then watch the terminal as the install script runs; it may well ask you questions: if the 2140 is usb connected, when it asks you if you want to specify Device URI? ..... just say no ..... ie hit the n key ..............
_________
at some stage, delete any 2140 icons in your PRINTERS folder that say foomatic etc as you tell us they do not work .....

HAY! WOW! ZIPPYDODA!!!
Well the first time through it did not print.
I deleted all the downloads referring to the printer.
Then downloaded it again.
Ran through the install process you outlined.
Printed as test page.
It worked!
One printed copy. Did it several times with different files.
All worked as planned.
Thank you so much

Post by pdc_2 »

So Stephen: well done; glad all is working now; if you are still out there; if you can add SOLVED to the title of your first post:

I have a Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia Cinnamon Computer with a Brother printer printing from it.
I also have Windows 10 Computer.
These 2 computers share the same ethernet switch, which is also connected to a Internet router.
The Windows 10 computer will not print.
The printer on the Linux computer is shared, or so I think it is.
I want to be able to have the Brother printer connected to Linux computer, print on the Windows 10 computer.
Thanks,
Stephen

Mint as printer server for Win10 wiki says Samba needed

Post by pdc_2 »

thanks Stephen;

that would seem to be printing from Windows to what is called an Ubuntu server in this wiki https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Netwo ... WithUbuntu

as Mint is derived from Ubuntu, their guides should be fine

this section of the wiki https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Netwo ... om_Windows talks of printing from Windows to the Ubuntu/Mint server

_____________-

and the wiki advises setting up Samba https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Netwo ... 28Samba.29 and that needs to be done as the first step;

This worked. I can print from my Linux computer with printer attached with success.

I can print from a Windows 10 computer that share the same ethernet switch.
I have put both computers through numerous test modes and the printer worked on both machines.

This is where I found the necessary information.

Thank you very much!
