Re: HPLIP HP OfficeJet Pro 8630
If you use the GUI to navigate to inside the bin directory: to see the image of hp-setup;
if you right-click on it, select run in terminal; does it run?
if you right-click on it, select run in terminal; does it run?
Re: HPLIP HP OfficeJet Pro 8630
Ok so I navigate to /usr/bin with the windows, and then the hp... files do show up... but when I click on hp-setup it reports the link is broken.
same thing for hp-check...
same thing for hp-check...

Re: HPLIP HP OfficeJet Pro 8630
so from a terminal if you do
..... that should get you inside the bin directory
and if you do .... that should list what is in that directory; make the terminal full-screen before you do it ...... does hp-setup and hp-check appear in that terminal?
Code: Select all
cd /usr/bin
and if you do
Code: Select all
ls
Re: HPLIP HP OfficeJet Pro 8630
You understood right, only the thing is that the correct 'bin' directory is inside of the 'usr' directory.
If your issue is solved, kindly indicate that by editing the first post in the topic, and adding [SOLVED] to the title. Thanks!
Re: HPLIP HP OfficeJet Pro 8630
sorry, yes, I took the wrong /bin the first time... so now we have some answers... for some reason those links are broken... what's to do now?

hplip is already the newest version (3.16.3+repack0-1).
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
libgsm1:i386 libpcap0.8:i386 wine-devel-amd64 wine-devel-i386:i386
Use 'sudo apt autoremove' to remove them.
so that does not work... seems to me that I should first delete all those hp-??? files? No?

Re: HPLIP HP OfficeJet Pro 8630
if you go back to what you started a couple of posts up: can you find your way from /usr and then get inside the /bin ... that is in /usr .....and inside /bin, can you see a hp-setup icon? If you can, I wonder what happens if you right-click and select "run in terminal" ....... if no joy you have downloaded the latest hplip so we can see about installing that ...........
Re: HPLIP HP OfficeJet Pro 8630
If I try that, here's what I get:
quote
The Link "hp-setup" is Broken. Move it to Trash?
This link cannot be used, because its target "../share/hplip/setup.py" doesn't exist.
Cancel Move to trash
unquote
but if I do try to move to trash, permission is denied.

Re: HPLIP HP OfficeJet Pro 8630
I suspect you need to remove hplip and install the newer version; not just remove, purge ..
if you do as discussed here ......... http://installion.co.uk/ubuntu/xenial/m ... index.html
that should cleanse things;
you may as well put in the latest 3.18.6 from here https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imag ... g/gethplip
if you click to download and save, it should end up in your Downloads folder; (whereas HP (wrongly) feel it will end up on your desktop ............)
so the commands would be
check with if you want;
then should run the install script;
if you do
Code: Select all
sudo apt purge hplip
that should cleanse things;

so the commands would be
Code: Select all
cd Downloads
Code: Select all
ls
then
Code: Select all
sh hplip-3.18.6.run
Re: HPLIP HP OfficeJet Pro 8630
something does not want to work...
the 3.18.6 run file is causing problems:
q
There was a problem opening the file /home/rogier/Downloads/hplip-3.18.6.run
The file you opened has some invalid characters. If you continue editing this file you could corrupt this document.
You can also choose another character encoding and try again.
unq
so I tried it again...
There was a problem opening the file /home/rogier/Downloads/hplip-3.18.6(1).run
it defaults to automatic selection of character encoding, but it gives you the choice of manual selection... which did not solve anything...
etc...
in short, I ended up reinstalling hplip-3.16.11.run instead and it is presently running... removing and installing...
and that ended as follows:
RE-STARTING HP_SYSTRAY

regardless of all that. the end result is that I now have a second entry for the printer. It would not recognize the wireless connection, so I reconnected it via USB and restarted the printer, and from then on it recognized the printer just fine.
Now my only remaining question is how I remove those bum printer definitions
Mystified how come it worked for more than a year, and suddenly lost it completely.

Re: HPLIP HP OfficeJet Pro 8630
Remove the earlier version as it can cause problems. Do this in System Settings/Printers. Clickt Printer at the top and then on the dropdown click on the printer you wish to delete, select "Delete"

Wow, thanks so much, that finished it up.
The only remaining mystery is why my hplip ended up getting corrupted. To a lesser degree, why the newer version of hplip blew up on me...
I guess I always like to have ALL the answers eventually you usually always figure it out.
