HP Envy Photo 7855

Post by cgiefer »

I purchased this printer recently because I've always had great success with HP printers and Linux in the past. Unfortunately, this time is different. If I go into System Settings and click Printers, it finds it right away and I'm able to print to it without any problems. However, it isn't detecting the scanner. When I bring up the HPLIP Device Manager it says "No Installed HP Devices Found". I try to set it up, and it can't find it. I am using a wireless network. The lpinfo command shows the following:

chad@chad-Inspiron-5767 ~ $ lpinfo -v
network lpd
network socket
direct hp
network beh
network https
network http
network ipps
network ipp
network ipp14
direct hpfax
network smb
network dnssd://HP%20ENVY%20Photo%207800%20series%20%5B7097D9%5D._ipp._tcp.local/?uuid=4ab059b7-8b3b-5d56-289a-a2a7e9c92dc9
network socket://10.0.0.173:9100
chad@chad-Inspiron-5767 ~ $

When I run hp-doctor it stops early in the process with the following message:

Checking for Deprecated items....
error: This distro (i.e linuxmint 18.3) is either deprecated or not yet supported.
The diagnosis is limited on unsupported platforms. Do you want to continue?(y=yes*, n=no):

Looking for ideas on how to approach this and get it working. I'm hoping it's an easy fix!

Linux scanning uses sane and you should be able to find the scanner with simple scan. If that does not find the scanner you may need to upgrade hplip to a newer version for your printer.

HP Envy Photo 7855 needs newer hplip

Post by pdc_2 »

so HP provide a page on their hplip website; where you can look up details of printers https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imag ... ices/index

and it does not need a plug-in; as some HP devices do; but it does need hplip version 3.17.9

Latest mint is still on 3.16.3 so you need at least 3.17.9

>>>>>>
after some careful detective work, karlchen reported that you need to fully remove an existing version of hplip .. before installing a newer version ..

oh dear; I can't find the link on the Mint forum; however here is his bug post https://bugs.launchpad.net/hplip/+bug/1 ... omments/13

seems to me it says

1) Before installing new HPLIP 3.16.11, used Synaptic to make sure the following packages had been uninstalled: libsane-hpaio hplip-data hplip-doc hplip-gui hplip (all version 3.16.3+repack0-1)

2) uninstall existing HPLIP 3.16.11 completely by

Code: Select all

sudo /usr/bin/hp-uninstall
3) install new HPLIP ......... see below

So do you feel up to opening synaptic; getting rid of those named programmes?
Then go here https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imag ... g/gethplip to get latest (3.18.6)
then open a terminal; copy the commands below;

Code: Select all

cd Downloads

Code: Select all

sh hplip-3.18.6.run
and that should install;

Thanks for the info, pdc_2. Unfortunately, this did not work. Not only am I still encountering the same issue, but Synaptic shows hplip as not even being installed. Not sure why as I went through the entire install process for 3.18.6 and everything appeared to look good. I am able to run HPLIP from the menu just fine, and it shows 3.18.6 as the version. For some reason Synaptic is not recognizing it, although I suppose that is a very minor issue compared to what I'm trying to accomplish.

I have made some progress. In order to discover the printer I had to go into the Advanced Options and change the Network discovery method from "SLP" to "mDNS/Bonjour". It was able to find the printer and get everything setup. Unfortunately, I keep getting data communication errors with the printer. In addition, when those errors aren't showing up, the scanner portion does not want to work. When I click the Scan icon it comes back saying it failed to open the device.

Sigh... isn't there a magic "fix-it" application out there somewhere? ;-)

I don't know of any magic bullet but you could do the following which may help.
1. install hplip-gui from synaptic. It's a gui front end for setting up hplip.
2. set your printer to a fixed IP address outside the normal DNS range my hp is set to .252 So no other devices will interfere.
Note: on my HP you can go to the wireless menu and set the IP address.
good luck.

I get the impression I may need to wait until the latest version becomes available in the repositories. Does anyone know when that might be? When I go into Synaptic to install hplip-gui, it wants to install hplip and a few others that it thinks are not installed (but actually are). Once it completed the install, nothing would happen when I tried to run it. I then went and installed the latest version of hplip (again) and Synaptic thinks none of those components are installed.

The good news is that the printer seems to work just fine. The bad news, however, is the scanner does not. It runs xsane when trying to access the scanner but fails to open the device.
