strange

Just did a fresh from scratch install of Mint 19 Cinnamon.

I have two AIO printers on the network: A brother AIO monochrome laser and a Canon Pixma MX922 AIO.

Both AIO machines were picked up during the OS installation process and work fine as a printer when I print from an app like LibreOffice Writer. I did not have to use the add printer utility. With previous versions of Mint I always had to manually add the printers with the System/Printers tool. But I could never get the scanner to work on either machine. Canon offers no Linux drivers on their website. Brother does and I had installed them in Mint 18.3 but scanner still did not work.

However, only the Brother shows as being installed in System Settings/Printers. When I try to add the Canon AIO I get a Cups Internal Server error message.

Simple Scan and Xsane both see the Canon but neither see the Brother scanner.

I find this a rather odd and confusing combination of effects. Do these oddities represent bugs in the new Mint 19?

Edit: I was able to get both printers installed and functional but had to use the web version of CUPS to do it. I think something is broken with the current Printer configuration tool built into the OS. Still can't get either Simple Scan or Xsane to see the Brother AIO, even when I install the drivers from Brother. Maybe Brother needs to provide new drivers. There are separate drivers on their website for the printer component and the scanner component. So this is partially solved.

Hi trent; sorry to hear of your troubles;

for the scanners, there was this bug fix from Ubuntu https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1728012

.. it may look depressing that there is so much text; the good news is it shows how actively folks try to fix things; and how open and collaborative and dynamic the fixing stuff is;

so the idea is to create links; to tell Mint where to go to find things; for Brother, they suggested in post #25

Code: Select all

sudo ln -sfr /usr/lib64/libbrscandec* /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu
and

Code: Select all

sudo ln -sfr /usr/lib64/sane/libsane-brother* /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/sane
...... that is for a brscan3 device; what is the model number of your Brother?

(the best way to install Brother drivers is to use the INSTALL TOOL as it has an install script, and can do the several other tweaks you seem to need http://support.brother.com/g/s/id/linux ... =on#f00107 and http://support.brother.com/g/s/id/linux ... =on#f00101 and finally http://support.brother.com/g/s/id/linux ... =on#u13.04 .. )

sorry it is so hard;
