SOLVED HP All-In_One printer C3180 prints garbage

Post by Clawinus » Wed Aug 01, 2018 4:28 pm

I have this printer attached either to a Windows 10 PC or to a Linux Mint 18.3 PC by using
an USB switcher. This set up has been working flawlessly for several years. A few days ago I noticed some
firmware updates on this printer from HP on Windows which eliminated the capability to use third party ink cartridges.

So I changed to HP cartridges which corrected the printing on the Windows PC but not for the Linux Mint PC.
Therefore, I updated HPlip to the newest Version 3.18.7 on the Mint PC. Yet the same printer which works well on Windows
produces garbage on the Mint PC. I attach an image of a decent PDF file of text to show how it appears in print over several pages,
although the file is only one page.

This file that I have attached I have scanned on the same printer attached to the Linux PC which means that the XSane process
is working on Linux but not the printing.

I expect that we will have to wait for another update of HPlip

I think I found the solution. After updating HPlip It seems to be required to run:
hp-setup.
I can now print again.

The solution to run:
hp-setup
worked only for one day. The printer still prints only garbage
just as shown in the PDF file out.pdf that I attached to my original submission.
I would appreciate help.

so that is a very fine and eight year old machine; it only needed hplip 0.9

How many icons do you have for it in the PRINTERS folder please?

If you right-click on any you have; look in MAKE & MODEL: copy what is there; please paste it back here;

what does

Code: Select all

lpinfo -v
say in a terminal please: copy from a terminal is select text then hold down three keys: control and shift and v ... sort of like a piano chord .. easy eh?

paste back here inside Code markers: no 5 icon from the left on the top line

Thanks for your reply. To sum it up I can print now, but I still do not understand
how this works.
Here is the output of the command lpinfo -v:
helmut@helmut-HP-ENVY-Desktop ~ $ lpinfo -v
network ipp
network https
network ipp14
network ipps
network http
direct hp
network smb
network socket
network lpd
network beh
helmut@helmut-HP-ENVY-Desktop ~ $

I checked for the software recommended by HP on the website:
https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imag ... ices/index

For my printer Photosmart C3180 it recommends version 1.6.6.
The one installed by Synaptic is 3.16.3.
Synaptic created an entry in the Mint App menu called HPLIP Toolbox.
When I open that it is named HP Device Manger and shows that it is the version 3.18.7, so the newest one.
This app allowed me to reset the options, eliminate two additional occurrences of the same printer
and print a test page. It also permits me to do the operations like align cartridges, check for ink levels etc similar to the HP Solution Center in Windows.

To have access to the HP Device Manger seems to me the decisive factor in managing printer operations.
Thanks again for the help.
