Printer Stopped Working in Cinnamon 18.3 [SOLVED]

Post by rgand » Wed Aug 22, 2018 1:04 pm

I have two installations of Mint Cinnamon 18.3 on this computer. The second installation is to test things and act as a backup.

My computer: ASUS G75V
i7-3610QM CPU @ 2.30GHz x4
16GB memory
Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon 64-bit
Linux Kernel 1.15.0-30-gerneric

Printer: Canon iX6820

The driver stopped working in this installation but if I boot to the other one, it works fine.

I also have TurboPrint on this installation but that doesn't work either.

Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this?

Thanks.

so I would assume it is "something" in the Mint install; that has halted printing; as you say you have Turboprint installed; (and I assume TP used to drive this printer before this recent halting?? is that so??)

Ubuntu have a wiki to try to help https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems

the section https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrinti ... _error_log suggests

Code: Select all

cupsctl LogLevel=debug
to activate debug logging.

then

Code: Select all

cupsctl LogDebugHistory=999999
for practically unlimited logging of failed jobs.

Code: Select all

cancel -a
to clear the queue from any stuck jobs

then follow the advice: have a read to see is there

<<
go to the PRINTERS folder in both systems; right click on the 6820 icon for both: look at MAKE & MODEL and tell us what it says

<<<
just so I bookmark it, I see Canon do supply debian drivers https://www.canon-europe.com/support/co ... anguage=EN as cnijfilter-ix6800series-4.10-1-deb.tar.gz

Thanks for the help on this. There was one stuck print job on the main installation and the commands canceled it.

Here's the printer driver MAKE & MODEL for both installations:

Main installation

Canon iX6800 series - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.11

Canon_PIXMA_iX6800series TurboPrint

Backup installation

Canon iX6800 series - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.11

The backup installation doesn't have TurboPrint installed. The main installation won't print with either driver. The backup installation prints fine.

good you got the cancelled job cleared; I was suggesting you go on and run the diagnostic log for it to list the problems

you could install the Canon driver and see if it works;

get it from the prior link and do

Code: Select all

cd Downlods

Code: Select all

tar -zxvf cnijfilter-ix6800series-4.10-1-deb.tar.gz

Code: Select all

cd cnijfilter-ix6800series-4.10-1-deb

Code: Select all

sudo ./install.sh
that will give a new icon; so you need to spot its name; to distinguish it from the one using gutenprint

you also could try deleting the turboprint and reinstalling it and see if that clears anything

Everything works, now. I installed the Canon driver. That must be new. They didn't support Linux when I got the printer a year ago. That's why I got TurboPrint. I just tested it on a file that wouldn't print properly a year ago and it did fine. I suspect that clearing the stuck print job may have helped, too. Many thanks for the great help.

glad it is all working .......
They didn't support Linux when I got the printer a year ago
...... ummmm ....... I would diffidently suggest it maybe is a question of knowing where to look ..... the driver you downloaded was issued 13th Feb 2014;

reviews of the printer start appearing May 2014; so that suggests surely the driver was made available as part of the planned release; and each time Canon release, they offer THREE linux drivers: debian and rpm packages; and source code

Canon Europe provide good support; one other site I used to cite; now seems to have withdrawn them; I wonder if they have been pressured to do so;

Well, then thanks for finding what I didn't. It's nice to have everything working again. I'll include that driver in my future installations of Mint.
