[SOLVED] Canon Pixma MG2520 Scanner - Device Not Found

Post by FuLl » Thu Aug 30, 2018 6:29 pm

I'm on Mint 18.3 KDE & have a Canon Pixma MG2520 All-In-One Printer/Scanner connected via USB. Today I tried scanning & get 'Device Not Found' errors, although the printer works fine.

The only thing I can think of that may have caused this is that I upgraded to kernel 4.15.0-32-generic a few weeks ago. However I don't recall trying to use the scanner for quite awhile ago, maybe on an older kernel.

I know when I originally installed this kernel, I had no HDMI, Network, or WiFi until I installed the associated headers, tools, modules & modules-extra packages. Being that I have all the extra accompanying stuff installed already, I'm at a loss as to what I might need to get the scanner back.

The Canon website says there are no Linux x64 drivers or anything needed & mentions whatever OS should provide the necessary software.

for a canon printer to scan you need a program called scangear download it from website below - I have a canon ts-3120 - this is how I got mine working

https://support-th.canon-asia.com/conte ... 90502.html

once downloaded extract the contents and you will see a folder called

scangearmp2-3.20-1-deb

Open that folder you will see 3 files now right click in this folder and open the terminal and type in or copy and paste

sudo bash ./install.sh

this will install it

after install to scan a document you must open the terminal and type in

scangearmp2

this should bring up the scanning app - it is said to work on several differnt models hopefully yours is included

After all is said & done I run scangearmp2, & the errors it gives me are pictured below in order of their appearing.
1.png
That last one just keeps scanning forever. I stopped it after 1 min or so.

Just for the sake of completeness, this shows the printer is indeed up & running:
2.png
When I downloaded that scangear package I found an old Canon archive in my software folder. It had cnijfilter-mg2500series-4.00-1-deb in it under this model's linux section, so I installed that too, just for the hell of it. Still no dice.

Don't know what else needs to happen. As for the scanner part of the device, I have no LEDs on there indicating anything other than low ink- which hasn't been a problem before.

I still have a 4.15.0-20-generic (+ headers, tools, modules, & modules-extra) installed. I might try to boot into that by the end of the weekend to see if that helps. If not I could try installing an older one, there's a linux-headers-4.10.0-38-generic still installed so maybe I had that kernel long ago. Not sure why that didn't autoremove but that's another issue.

Thanks for your help thus far.

for a canon printer to scan you need a program called scangear
It is very true that Canon provide scanner drivers for linux; and also that the open-source support team work hard to ensure SANE covers as many devices as possible;

so SANE feel the MG2500 series should be fully supported;
MG2500.png
If you think the 4.15 kernel could be an issue; what about a reboot? select advanced options; (under the default): select a 4.4 kernel and see what happens;

Simple Scan or Xsane should find the scanner

what does

Code: Select all

sane-find-scanner
and

Code: Select all

scanimage -L
give in a terminal please?

sane-find-scanner as root found it, as user didn't:

Code: Select all

found USB scanner (vendor=0x0bda [Generic], product=0x0129 [USB2.0-CRW]) at libusb:001:010
scanimage -L as user or root returned the same error:

Code: Select all

No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation
which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).
Haven't compiled that newer version yet. Kindof want to not have to.

so SANE should support this device;

if you do look at ScanGearMP from Canon;

if I go to Canon Europe, they say; for MG2500series; to use a 2500-specific version of ScanGear; so as they make the hardware, and supply the software, I suppose we should follow this advice .. if one wants to install it so one would go here https://www.canon-europe.com/support/co ... 20(64-bit)

to download scangearmp-mg2500series-2.20-1-deb.tar.gz

So I uninstalled the ones I had installed previously, installed these, & still no scanner. I had to force some through dpkg, but afterward when I ran sudo apt-get install -f it was fine. Also sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude upgrade has no errors, so I think it's okay...

I should be able to reboot later today, & see what old kernels do.

Gosh; you did all that ........ do you purge all other kernel options? I just assumed you would have a 4.4 variant left:

Yes, usually I purge the kernels before the one prior to the latest. When I look in Synaptic the earliest version I see is linux-image-4.10.0-14-generic, but there's no modules or modules-extra to go with it.

Earliest I see with those is 4.15.0-20-generic which is already installed.

Looking today I see a newer set I haven't installed yet: 4.15.0-33-generic. I have the 4.15.0-32 now from last week. Not sure which package I might be able to install that would depend on whatever the latest available version including modules & modules-extra. But whatever, maybe 33 would help... Not sure.

I'm definitely hesitant of installing a kernel without that extra stuff after that one time when stuff broke without it. Not sure which exactly I need, but I guess a shotgun approach works for now.

Found & installed 4.4.0-134-lowlatency but there's no change. Will be switching back to a 4.15.x-x

Another thing I changed recently comes to mind, that was done between a time when the scanner did work, & now. I upgraded my BIOS & turned off HT. Though I'd never imagine this having anything to do with it- especially since the printer's not affected.

There's this old thread where I have the same problem with saned, although mine's not networked:
viewtopic.php?t=244851

I reinstalled everything that came up from a 'sane' query in Synaptic. Didn't help.

Funny thing is that although the printer shows as active in the system tray icon, it's not there when I do sudo lsusb.

I am intrigued that you would do "sudo lsusb" ...... which source suggested that please?

What does

Code: Select all

lsusb
and

Code: Select all

lpinfo -v
give please? If you copy the results that are shown in the terminal; and paste back here inside the code tags: 5th icon in the above line

https://www.printerdriver.co/canon-pixm ... -download/

down toward bottom of page - MG2500 series IJ Printer Driver Ver. 4.00 for Linux (Debian Package archive)

Hi FuLJ
Just did sudo after without didn't see it. Both omitted the printer...
I am not sure what you mean by this;

If the printer is usb connected; and was plugged in; and turned on; when you ran the

Code: Select all

lsusb
command; then something strange is going on as it should say
ID 04a9:176d Canon Inc
.... and I can't see any mention of that;

for our MG Pixma I get several responses
direct cnijusb:/dev/usb/lp0
direct usb://Canon/MG3100%20series?serial=402E18&interface=1
direct cnusb:/dev/usb/lp0
so our printer is sort of waving and saying hello ..

With that in mind I've wondered if my printer unit is broken. Shortly after turning it on I see my printer go to the ready state on my system tray printer dialog. But it's not listed in lsusb regardless of whether it's run by user or sudo. Plus the scanner's never detected by any apps using sane.

I wonder if can plug the Canon DIRECTLY into a usb port; one that you know is working; then try the

Code: Select all

lsusb
again in different ports

(wondering if it is plugged into a usb hub .. sometimes folks report issues there ..)
