Solved Wireless Connection
Mint 18-0 Cinnamon 64bit. HP Office Jet 6500. Non wireless. Ethernet is out. I connected a Edimax USB wireless dongle to the printer using a type A by type B connector Can I expect that to work? I was able to connect from my laptop using USB cable. How do I get Mint to see the wireless dongle.

Re: Wireless Connection
First thing is does the printer assign it a IP address and recognize it. If the dongle is connected to the printer (which is what I understand) the printer mush have the drivers etc to make it work. If it's a non wifi printer just plugging in a wireless dongle to the usb port will not work unless the printer has the software to recognize it. May be I miss understand what your trying to do.

Re: Wireless Connection
You have the right understanding. The printer is a non wifi printer. It does have Ethernet. I suspect it does not have software to recognize wifi. I just ran the printers Network configuration. I am sending it as a jpeg. I am currently connected to it using USB printer cable.
I tried adding the printer using Ethernet cable from my router, but Mint reported no Ethernet.

Re: Wireless Connection
The wireless usb is not going to work with the printer.
You may be able to set it up as a network printer having it attached to the router via ethernet should work the router should assign it an address witch you can access via your laptop's wireless. I'm assuming here you have a wireless enabled router. You will still have to install the printer on the laptop I'd suggest installing hplip-gui with this command in a terminal once it's install go to hplip toolbox and run the install new printer.
if the printer is visible on the network it should find it. If your printer setup allows it you may want to set a permanent ip address out side the range of any other device that you have connected to the network.

Re: Solved Wireless Connection
To confirm, wireless is not doable. I connected printer to my router with Ethernet cable. Mint saw the printer and automagically installed it. I did not have to do anything. That's a first. I am now able to print and scan from my wireless laptop. I tried Ethernet earlier this week, but Mint did not see it.

Glad it worked for you, enjoy
