Mint 19 Tara Printer HP 1102W does not work -- Solved

Post by pgmer6809 »

Under Sylvia (18.3) there are no issues with my HP 1102W Printer over the wireless connection.
Under Ubuntu 18.04 (Bionic) there are no issues with this printer.
Under TARA (Mint19) The printer is found and defined. I have several options for the URI but it will not print a test page.
Even if I give it exactly the same device URI as what works for Ubuntu 18.04 it still will not work.
The CUPS troubleshooter advises so check the logs with Journalctl and this is what I see:

No idea why it labels the line wiht the error a
/fax
. Fax never shows up in any of the setup screens.
The Printer is obviously fine. And it should not be an issue with systemd or the kernel since Ubuntu 18.04 works fine. So it must be a MINT 19 problem, and maybe not with just my printer but maybe with the CUPS setup.

Here are settings that work with Ubuntu 18.04 and which I have copied verbatim into Mint19
(I also tried many other settings in Mint19, some of which work in Sylvia, and they also fail).
URI:

Any ideas?

Thanks for trying but the above reply does not help much. One of the links goes back to 2006.
My problem is not installing the printer. As you can see in the OP, the printer is discovered fine and installed fine.
The problem seems to be with actually printing and judging by the troubleshooting output the problem may be with CUPS or with HP-LIP
whichever is actually trying to print.
What is different between how MINT19 treats CUPS and spooling and how BIONIC Ubuntu does it?
BIONIC works. TARA does not.
But I am still at a loss. The permissions for the /var/spool/cups and subdirs are the same in both BIONIC and TARA. The group numbers are the same. The owners are the same (user lp) The cups daemon's are running under the same user.

I am still at a loss.

with
HP LaserJet Pro P1102w Foomatic/foo2zjs-z2 (recommended)
you are using the open-source (Foomatic) driver;

to try to access hplip, if you do

Code: Select all

hp-check
and see what that gives please

(I see you need hplip > 3.1-.4 so you are fine with the existing version installed)

I ran hp-check -r.

whew!! that gives a LOT of output. Not sure what to do with it.
It says it has version 15.1 for dependency checks. here are some extracts

Hurrah! HP1102W works well!

Post by pdc_2 »

magnificent! You did very well; glad it is all sorted; extraordinary it seems how much is missing; if one uses hplip; perhaps

Code: Select all

hp-setup
might have dragged it in automatically; but enjoy the printer now!

PS as it now works in the fully functioning mode: can you go back to the title of your first post; and take out the does not work and add SOLVED please: it will help others following in your wake

I had the same problem. Found a post for an earlier release than Tara and tried it and it worked.
Here's the terminal commands that I used. Note that I didn't get to the last line because the printer started working after the fourth line. I thibk the plugin install is now part of the hp-setup.

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install xsane hplip-gui hplip
hp-setup
hp-plugin

Good luck.
