Brother MFC-J480DW Won't Install?

Post by pcpunk »

Really struggling with this one guys, don't know why Linux has to be so hard to install printers too.

I went to the Brother site and started with the "Driver Install Tool" and when that didn't work I installed all kinds of stuff in Synaptic Package Manager related to Brother, conservatively of course.

I then decided to install the Printer Driver: LPR printer driver (deb package)
and
CUPSwrapper printer driver (deb package): I don't even know if these two are supposed to be installed together, but there are little to no directions on the brother site.

Tried all kinds of other stuff in "Add Printers" I leave this output below. I've noticed that the Printer don't really show up on list's of Supported ones, but at the same time there are drivers for it on their site, makes no sense of course.

work-4-HP-G71-Notebook-PC work-4 # dpkg -l | grep Brother
ii brother-cups-wrapper-common 1.0.0-10-0ubuntu6 amd64 Common files for Brother cups wrapper packages
ii brscan-skey 0.2.4-1 amd64 Brother Linux scanner S-KEY tool
ii brscan4 0.4.5-1 amd64 Brother Scanner Driver
ii mfcj480dwlpr 1.0.0-0 i386 Brother inkjet lpr printer Driver
ii printer-driver-ptouch 1.3-8 amd64 printer driver Brother P-touch label printers

Help!!!!!

Hi pcpunk

so to use the installer tool, you copy each command below; paste it into the terminal; hit the ENTER key; and on to the next line

(assuming you have already downloaded it, and it is in your Downloads directory, and it is linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.1-1.gz )

Code: Select all

cd Downloads

Code: Select all

gunzip linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.1-1.gz

Code: Select all

sudo bash linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.1-1 MFC-J480DW
that should trigger the install script; watch as it runs as it will ask questions; .... did you do all that already? I wasn't sure .........

Yes, that is exactly what I did, and assume that is why I have those packages installed listed. I see the printer trying to print, but nothing happens. I also see that that first installer is for an MFC-J880DW I believe. If you unpack that first installer you would see what I'm saying. Then I went and installed the next packages down on the list, and when unpacked they had the correct Printer Model in the package name. Sorry, got tired and put away Linux and am in Windows 7 now.

thanks; sorry you have moved on;

for any Mint members reading this; this J480DW is listed as being airprint-compatible (AC); that AC feature came with Ubuntu 17.04 so only joined Mint with this Mint 19 release;

so the theory was: AC would mean Mint would auto-configure ....... so no need; (one understood:) to download any drivers;

I can only assume that in this case there is only one icon in the PRINTERS folder; and that it is for the Brother drivers (lpr and cupswrapper) downloaded and installed; ....... that somehow the AC didn't auto-configure ...

....... an AC setup shows something saying "driverless" as I understand it ......

There have been one or two printer problems with Mint 19 .............

I was in 17.2 KDE, and will try it again, but don't quite understand what you are saying. I did see something to the effect of "ac" in SPM, so maybe will install that also. One other thing I was wondering, I installed the package from a folder I created in Downloads, and did not install directly from the Directory Downloads, though don't think that will matter.

Re: Brother MFC-J480DW Won't Install?

Post by pcpunk »

Here is the two .deb files that were unpacked and installed. The weird thing is, now, the first one won't install if I click on it? The second one will install every time I click on it. But, it shows as being installed, so it don't make any sense to me.

mfcj880dwcupswrapper-1.0.0-0.i386.deb

mfcj880dwlpr-1.0.0-0.i386.de

After trying many things to make it work I installed these also.

mfcj480dwcupswrapper-1.0.0-0.i386.deb: I assume this one is the same exact file as the one above.

mfcj480dwlpr-1.0.0-0.i386.deb: I also assume this one is the same but is labeled as the 480 instead of the 880?

What's going on here guys, this is a super common printer by a very big printer company. Am I missing a Folder somewhere or something? I went through a bunch of commands to make sure all the proper folders were present and they all were as far as I could tell.

I see the issues but don't know how to fix them.

Arrrggg, just reinstalled with all the files in Downloads and was much more successful without all those errors, but it still don't work? Sorry, forgot to copy the output.

Hi pcpunk,

The reason is that most printer companies don't provide drivers for Linux. It's not the fault of Linux.

But I have found that Brother is very good with Linux support. I have a Brother MFCJ5830DW which works quite well.

Before you downloaded, did you read the section "Notes before downloading"? Many users miss that section. There are a few things that should be done before installation.

P.S. Please paste your output in between code tags [code] [/code] for easier reading.

More the reason to just buy an HP! I think there is something weird with this printer and linux. I've seen others install this printer but no one has documented it very well. I guess Brother don't care if we can install this printer? Seems weird that so many other printers are supported but not this one. HP has the best support.

Re: Brother MFC-J480DW Won't Install?

Post by pdc_2 »

so I understood this device was the MFC-J480DW .. because that is the title of your first post; and 480 appears in that

so the command I suggested was

Code: Select all

sudo bash linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.1-1 MFC-J480DW
.. as you said your device was the 480DW

but you seem to have changed that; (I always recommend copying and pasting commands) ..

........the command you seemed to have used was
sudo bash linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.1-1 MFC-J880DW

so linux does what it was told: it went off looking for the 880;
error processing archive mfcj880dwlpr-1.0.0-0a.i386.deb
then it says it can't find such a thing
cannot access archive: No such file or directory
...

...... I assuming that it seems illogical to it that it was told to get files for an 880; it attempts to download them; then run them; whereas when it checks what is plugged in to the computer; it finds a 480

You are finding it all very frustrating; and the bash script is also finding it difficult

I did make that mistake once it appears, but the first time and third time I did it correctly, as you can see by the output in my first post. I think that was an attempt to install one of the Unpacked .deb files, because, as I said once, those are what the Unpacked files for the 480 are named. I will Unpack that installer again just to confirm.

Code: Select all

Re: Brother MFC-J480DW Won't Install?

Post by pdc_2 »

so as I understand it; to be able to use a printer in linux; in general one needs to:

1) install the drivers
2) register the printer with lpadmin ........ so it knows which ppd file to use when you say "Use the BROWN printer" ... it has already learnt and says to itself; ..... ah, at the beginning, s/he told me when they mention the BROWN printer in future, I should the brown.ppd file as my source ................

(this seems to be the formula
sudo /usr/sbin/lpadmin -p [printer name] -m [PPD file name] -v [DEVICE URI]
.. you don't do that; the system does it behind the scenes ............

so Brother seem to say you need the lpr and the cupswrapper driver

so they say
mfcj480dwlpr-1.0.0-0.i386.deb
and
mfcj480dwcupswrapper-1.0.0-0.i386.deb
<<<<<<
when I go back to your very first post, you list exactly that lpr package ie mfcj480dwlpr-1.0.0-0.i386.deb

but for the cupswrapper you had a 64bit version brother-cups-wrapper-common 1.0.0-10-0ubuntu6 amd64 .. I don't know if that is ok, or if it is not ...
<<<<<

seems to me; to fulfil part 1) of getting a printer to work; the best shot would be to have installed; what Brother recommend as the lpr and cupswrapper

and as you seem very fluent with commands, you can check if you have these installed with

Code: Select all

dpkg -l | grep Brother
I notice you doing
# dpkg -l | grep Brother
and that seems to me to signify you are using some variant of su or sudo; I have always understood such are NOT needed to run these commands .....
<<<<<<
so if these two are installed; it seems to me to be sensible; that if you have one or more icons for the printer; sitting in the PRINTERS folder; and none work; best delete them and set up a new registration;

so I would suggest to anyone they do that; ie delete existing; non-functioning icons in that PRINTERS folder;

then, top-left of that folder; click the big ADD button top-left; pause; let it work; let it search; drum fingers gently on table; harrumph at delay; when it gets back to you,

your printer is networked; let it find that; it will likely say "Is this the one you want set up?" You could then say yes; and it should then create a registration for you; meaning it registers the printer with lpadmin; the admin for linux printing in your system

# dpkg -l | grep Brother
I just made a mistake is all in my Copy Paste, but it still worked so I didn't notice.

I used the "Installer" and it's all working now, so don't really know the purpose of all this. If you want to clarify what is going on look at Pjotr's site for his instructions which worked perfectly. But you still need to Add the Printer and choose the CUPS driver from the list in the Add Printer Window. Prior to using Pjotr's instructions the drivers were not present in the Add Printer Window, even though grep showed it was installed. From my first post:
ii brother-cups-wrapper-common 1.0.0-10-0ubuntu6 amd64 Common files for Brother cups wrapper packages

Sorry, not in Linux right now so cannot be of help till later.

Re: Brother MFC-J480DW Won't Install?

Post by pcpunk »

I have no idea now how all those 880 files ended up in my downloads at all. I thought they were from the 480 Installer, and maybe they were, but now that I used Pjotr's directions I only see the 480 Install Files.

Here is the output of grep

Code: Select all

work-4@work-4-HP-G71-Notebook-PC:~ > dpkg -l | grep Brother
ii brother-cups-wrapper-common 1.0.0-10-0ubuntu6 amd64 Common files for Brother cups wrapper packages

ii  brscan4                                     0.4.5-1                                           amd64        Brother Scanner Driver

ii mfcj480dwlpr 1.0.0-0 i386 Brother inkjet lpr printer Driver

work-4@work-4-HP-G71-Notebook-PC:~ > sudo nano /etc/default/grub
I wonder if I can get rid of these:

Scanner don't work and I'm out of ideas. I can only assume it should work, but can't make heads or tales of anything at the Brother stie?

Code: Select all

work-4@work-4-HP-G71-Notebook-PC:~ > dpkg -l | grep brscan
ii  brscan-skey                                 0.2.4-1                                           amd64        Brother Linux scanner S-KEY tool
ii  brscan4                                     0.4.5-1                                           amd64        Brother Scanner Driver

Do you have Firewall on? If so, did you open the ports that Brother said to do in the "Before installing"?
