[Solved] Cannot make Image Scan work in Linuxmint 19

Post by kayeng »

Hello Friends,

In Linuxmint 18, I was able to use Image Scan with my Epson L210 by adding the following line in the file /etc/sane.d/epkowa.conf

usb 0x04b8 0x08a1

I did the exact same thing in my new Linuxmint:

Kernel: 4.15.0-20-generic x86_64 bits: 64
Desktop: Xfce 4.12.3 Distro: Linux Mint 19 Tara

but I always get this message:

Could not send command to scanner.
Check the scanner's status.

What am I missing?
(The printer is connected to the desktop computer via usb cable.)

Epson's Image Scan for Linux works only if you install the "image-scan" bundle from the Epson Download Centre:
http://download.ebz.epson.net/dsc/searc ... ch/?OSC=LX

As you are using a USB connection, no further adjustments are necessary since USB recognition is automatic. The recommendation mentioned in epkowa.conf to specify the vendor and product ID applies only to force recognition if automatic recognition fails.

Are you able to scan with Simple Scan?

You are using kernel 4.15.0-20, the current kernel is 4.15.0-36.

I installed the bundle, now both Image Scan and Simple Scan don't work. =)

For some reason I've always had trouble installing Image Scan .

The components included in the iscan-bundle can be installed individually.

Right click on the downloaded tar.gz bundle and select "Extract here" which will create a file called "iscan-bundle-1.0.4.x64.deb". Open this file to see 3 files: core, data, plugins.
Open the data file first and double click the file therein "iscan-data_1.39.0-1_all.deb" to install.
Next open the file called "core" and double click on the file therein "iscan_2.30.3-1_amd64.deb" to install.

The third file called plugins is needed only if you want to use wi-fi rather than a USB connection but the installation procedure is the same as for the first 2 files.

If you have not solved your issue, have a look at this bug report: solutions can be found in e.g. comment 98 in that bug thread. https://bugs.launchpad.net/debian/+sour ... ug/1707352 My Epson v370 started working after this fix, and VueScan now works again (although iScan does not).

Long story short, it seems the Debian people renamed libsane to libsane1. There was a reason for this, but many 3rd party packages (e.g. Epson's driver packages) broke in the process. Epson's install script wants libsane but during installation one can see that under Mint 19 libsane1 is chosen.

pastic you are a genius!

I copied the three files like comment 98 says, then rebooted, and now both SimpleScan and ImageScan work.

Thanks everyone! This thread is solved.

Actually, I am not a genius, I'm just passing on info from real geniuses in that bug report. :D But I am glad I could help.

I know you refer to comment 98, that I pointed you to, but may I ask exactly what you did to make things work? Because it puzzles me that for you Image Scan and Simple Scan works, whereas they still don't for me. only VueScan works for me after the fix.

Hello pastic!

In comment #98 , this line, and ONLY this line, is what I did:

Copied the 3 files from /usr/lib/sane to /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/sane

That's it. Nothing else. =)

Hi guys,

I just got an Epson Ecotank ET-3750 and run into similar problems - scanner is not found on system...

Your answers might also help me, but strangely I don't have a folder "/usr/lib/sane", and therefore cannot copy files from there... Is there another location I should look at, or what three files am I looking for?

Thanks a dozen and best regards

just saw your post. i have an epson et-4750 printer and it works.
first things first, goto epson site and d/l Imagescan-bunble-ubuntu-18.04-1.3.38.x86.deb
then open package and you will see 2 folders CORE and PLUGINS . in the core folder run the file in there first.
then in the plugins folder run the imagescan network program.
then in root, edit the imagescan.conf with the following lines:

[devices]
net.udi = %esci:networkscan://(printers IP address):1865
net.vendor = Epson
net.model = ET-3750
net.name = (any name for your scanner)
then save.

Next edit your host file with the following first line is a must:

(printers IP address):1865
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 (your computers name)
save, then re-boot

your scanner should now work with image scan or simple scan. only one of those work with mine but i forget which one gscan2pdf never detected a scanner, but i have just installed the latest v 2.2.1 so will check when i get home.
hope this works for you.

For the sake of completeness, I just wanted to add, that waiting paid off in this case:

I've got an Epson ET-3750, connected via USB. Somehow I never managed to get the scanner to work so far, gave up in autumn... Now checked again and everything works "out of the box" with the new Epson driver/software...:
  1. Download Epson's latest Linux scanner driver from: http://support.epson.net/linux/en/imagescanv3.php
    (I chose Linux Mint 19/64bit, according to my system - driver labeled: imagescan-bundle-linuxmint-19-3.55.0.x64.deb)
  2. extract downloaded file to folder
  3. run ./install.sh (as suggested)
>>> Took about three seconds to install, and now - finally - everything is working perfectly: Epson's Imagescan, XSane, Simple Scan, gscan2PDF...

Wow!! Epson seems to care about Linux and actually work on improving their software.
(Finally I can get rid of a virtual Windows-Installation, run for the only sake of being able to scan... :lol: )

Best regards

I would like to know what net.model I shall to use in the file imagescan.conf. I am using a Epson Ecotank L3150. As printer it is working fine in my WiFi local network.

more imagescan.conf
# /etc/imagescan/imagescan.conf -- Image Scan configuration
# Refer to the documentation for details on the configuration options
# for the software. Plugins should come with their own documentation
# if they have configuration options.
#
# Lines starting with a # or a ; are comments. Comments must be on a
# line of their own. End-of-line comments are not supported.
[device]
net.udi = networkscan:esci://192.168.1.105:1865
net.vendor = Epson
net.model = L3150
net.name = My Network Scanner

I suspect it is not L3150 but something like: DS-XX00

Could someone help me?
