The involved terminal/computer was of course running/operating 64bit Linux Mint 19.1 <---- My apologies for not being clear. Then Xsane .999 of course did not work due to a regression of 'libsane' or 'libsane1' whichever/whatever it is.
1. Brother MFC-J475DW uses brsane #4 = no problem printing 'THEN NO' scanning via network. <---- add 'Brother4' to /etc/sane.d/dll.conf <---- Then Xsane works fine via wireless.
2. Brother MFC-MFC-440CN uses brsane #2 = no problem printing <---- Good right ----> Xsane .999 is not able to scan off of the flatbend scanner. Regardless of what the above 'propeganda' states/relates to another model.
brscan-skey -L will not verify an active printer meaning 'Brother MFC-440CN' plugged in via USB !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! <---- Inactive always ----> It's a regression/planned obselescence via Xsane.
sane-find-scanner ----> Does IN FACT list the 'Brother MFC-440CN and suggest hex to add to the backend. <---- A backend was added via this following link ---->
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1707352 AND this link ---->
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SANE% ... o-detected
The MFC-J475DW will never SCAN under Xsane .999 while running/operating a 4.15.etc kernel unless the following is added to the /etc/sane.d/dll.conf <---- While running Mint 19.1
brother4 <---- ADD THIS LINE.
brother2 <---- MOST likely is already there.
ENSURE that both of the above lines are there/in the file listed above.
Long story short is that the 'Xsane' scanning program has no want or need for an old 'Brother-MFC440CN' flatbed scanner to actually work. <---- Planned obselence?
The MFC-440CN is so easy to refill [once |cartridge/s| split] with ink and such a quality built inkjet printer and by it's design I am able to use the printer With Mint 17.3 which of course will never have to be online again.
There have never been issues with the above listed printers: NOT PRINTING: the issue has and is in fact occuring with the 'Xsane' image scanning program. <---- I cannot leave any messages on the mailing list though I am polite. ---->

I do wish all the users of older and even new 'Brother' printers and scanners: Absolute Success while using the GNU/Linux operating system.
Thank you once again Mint Team.
