HP P1102W Laserjet Installation Issues [SOLVED]

Post by n00bcake22 »

Hello Everyone, first post ever so bear with me...

Okay, finally trying to make the switch to Linux and decided on Mint. So far, love how easy most of the transition has been except this printer installation: HP P1102W Laserjet

From the searching I've done, it looks like it's a common problem/issue and I've tried several other threads' solutions and now I'm just lost. Maybe I'm close; maybe I made it much, much worse. I have zero idea.

At one point, it was recognized in my "Printers" settings (now it's gone) and the HP-Doctor provides this error:
Unable to open device hp:/usb/HP_LaserJet_Professional_P1102w?serial=000000000Q91HYRHPR1a.

So... any advice? At the moment, I'm just rebooting into Windows on my other SSD whenever I need to print something. I'm excited to get this working so I can finally be done with Windows. :D

the LinuxMint project is based upon the Ubuntu Project:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/575547/ ... -on-ubuntu
so, that maybe of help, if you haven't tried that method.

what did the printer Wizard do, when you initially connected the HP Printer ?
- that only partially got the HP Printer working ?.

I have two P1102W installed in my home and one at a neighbor running Mint 19 Cinnamon on all three.

The P1102W requires install of the HP plugin. If you have the HPLIP-GUI installed in Mint, open the HPLIP Toolbox from Menu - Preferences, and select "Install Required Plugin" from the Actions tab for the printer.

Should be a simple case of running the following three commands and completing the directions as they are presented.

Code: Select all

$ sudo apt install hplip hplip-gui xsane
$ hp-setup
$ hp-plugin
For more information, take a look at the posting linked in my signature.

Thanks for the replies! Going down the list...

Pierre, that process left me with the following error in terminal when attempting to connect via USB:

Code: Select all

error: No device selected/specified or that supports this functionality.
ClixTrix, I opened HIPLIP Toolbox, dialog box notified me "No Installed HP Devices Found", selected "Setup Device" option, which just closes and reopens the dialog. If I run hp-setup in terminal, "Device Discovery" dialog box opens, select USB option, Next, ... no devices listed/found. Terminal output: "error: No devices found on bus: usb"

srq2625, terminal output after each:
1. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 323 not upgraded.
2. Opens same dialog as above with same error.
3. Dialog box opens, "The driver plugin for HPLIP 3.18.7 appears to already be installed. DO you wish to download and re-install the plug-in? I reinstalled, installation successful.

Any ideas from here? :)

OK.....did the following from a Mint 19.1 Cinnamon x64 test system this morning.

1. Disconnected my P1102W's USB cable from my production system in my sig and powered down the printer.
2. Booted my Mint 19.1 test system. Note, this system already had a P1102W installed Wifi and I'd previously installed the plugin.
3. Plugged-in the USB cable to the test system and powered-up the P1102W......printer was automatically detected and installed....verified showing in Printers app as USB installed.
4. Launched the HPLIP Toolbox to double-check plugin and it showed already installed.
5. Printed test page from Toolbox.

Edit: Please note, I'm using the default version of HPLIP bundled with Mint 19.1. Only installs to the test system beyond that were the HPLIP-GUI and the click install of the plugin from Toolbox.

It was necessary for me to run this test as I am preparing to migrate the production system to Mint 19.1.

Edit2: If you're having a problem with USB, run the following command from Terminal to see if the printer is detected.

Code: Select all

lsusb
You should see something similar to this....with 03f0:032a designating an HP P1102W USB device.

ClixTrix, that did it; thank you so much! To others having the issue, I'm betting the full and complete power reset is the key as I had hot-swapped the USB cable several times which did nothing.

Anyways, thanks again to everyone and I'll mark as SOLVED.

Got your message. Can you give additional explanation on the problem you are having, as it looks like you are trying to install a package that is not necessary for the P1102W to work under Mint 19.1. Perhaps start a new thread.
