Xsane found the scanner immediately.
18.3 Cinnamon
it will Preview the 8x10 document correctly.
but, when I ask for it to scan and save the file, it only saves about 1.5 inches from the top of the paper down.
The Scanner Taskbar in Xsane reflects this also, it moves across about 10% of the line and aborts.
Surely there is something simple to fix this minor wrinkle?
IIRC, in discussions in the past, Xsane was the recommended application to use.
If not, then suggest a better one.
I am installing this for a friend's wife, who is a bookkeeper and does not have a clue about computers. she uses the menu to do her bookwork and that is it.
so, I need a scanner app easy for a non-geek to understand.
BTW, she is loving Mint 18.3 because it never gives her those Blue Screens of Death,
nor does it insist that Win7 is out of date.

Re: Xsane & HP-3510 printer/scanner
Problem solved by using a different app called Gscan2pdf
will leave the post up, just simply because I want to know for myself.
but, Gscan2pdf is flawless, and the lady fully understands it because it is so BASIC.
nothing fancy, just makes a PDF and she is done.
she is happy.
