High resolution scanner recommendation ?

Post by ronsmeyer »

I have boxes and boxes of old family photos that I'd like to scan and catalog.
Does anyone have a recommendation for a good quality, high resolution scanner that works well with Linux? I don't believe my little Canon all-in-one is up to the task and it's also slow as a turtle.
It needs to be a flatbed scanner as some photos are too fragile for a feeder and wireless as well.
I appreciate any recommends. Thank You.

The question is what you understand by high resolution. As long as you scan non-transparent originals 1200 dpi should be sufficient and most scanners can do that.
However, if you scan slides or film negatives, it will be expensive, very few products on the market are of high quality.

As a rule of thumb, you can take this:

300 dpi = high quality printout 1:1
600 dpi = 2:1 (length and width doubled)
1200 dpi = 4:1 (length and width quadrupled)

^^
What I understand as high resolution is the photo quality of the scan is equal to the original photo. The scan quality from my little Canon all-in-one TS6020 is definitely below that mark. The scan results are not as clear and the colors are off. I'm looking for a product that will faithfully reproduce the original.

With this Epson you should be able to take good pictures. And the $ 130 price is still in the frame.
As with all other manufacturers, the technical details are pure marketing.
