Officejet 5255 printer

Post by ggbuttars »

I'm using linux mint 17 and can not make my HP Officejet 5255 printer print in color. It copies in color just fine so it's not the ink cartridge like hp tech tried to tell me. I am new here and I did search for this printer as a topic. Please forgive me if this topic is covered elsewhere.

Hello ggbuttars,

you are using LM 17, which is not supported anymore. Maybe the best way is to upgrade/install LM 18.x or 19.x and check, if the problem still exists.

Regardless, it would be helpful to have more information about your system. Please open the terminal and run the following command. Copy the result and paste it here:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
(the F is a capital letter. Please highlight the pasted text and press the </> button above the text box to put it in a codeblock for better readability)

Hello ggbuttars,

thank you for your system overview. HP printers are supported in Linux Mint by the hplip driver:

https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imag ... ices/index

Your printer model is not explicitly listed but some other similar OfficeJet models. The required minimum hplip version is 3.17.9 and as far as I know, Linux Mint 17 came with version 3.14.6. It is possible to upgrade the version but because (as mentioned above) your LM 17 isn't supported anymore, I recommend to upgrade ( the best with a fresh install) to version LM 19.x for better and longer support until 2023 (LM 18 is supported until 2021) and if I'm right, the hplip version 3.17.10. So please think about it. You could download a LM 19 version and make a bootable DVD or USB, so you can test it in the live system.

https://www.linuxmint.com/download_all.php

Your CPU is able to run a 64-bit system and you have 4 GB RAM, so all 64 bit version are possible to try.

Hello ggbuttars,

with the live-system you can't make anything wrong. It is a check, whether your hardware runs with the version you try. Nothing will be changed to your installed version. So just give it a try :) . Here is a link for an how-to to create a bootable DVD/USB:

Don't know if this will help, but you might be assured to know that my HP 5255 installs automagically with every Ubuntu flavor I've tried, including Mint 19.3. A test print does color and b/w great.
