<Solved> Scanning Canon Image Class MF244dw

Post by katalia369 »

On the advice of another user, I am moving this question to a new thread. (Thank You Kester)

I have this model of printer and was wondering how to get the scanner side to work. I can print, in Mint 19 and 20 now with no problems, I just cannot get it to scan for anything. Currently, I have Canon Business Print app installed on my phone and activate the scanner from there, then I load the scan to my Google Drive and pull it onto my computer as a network location. While this is a working solution of sorts I would prefer to be able to just hit the scan button. I have a home office and my printer is mostly for my work, from time to time others in the house need to print though so it is connected via WiFi to the home network, it is not plugged in via USB to anything. My system is a dual boot between Mint 20 and Win10, but Win side is for games only and rarely accessed. I work almost entirely (95%) out of Mint. I built my system myself and there are times, like now, that I wish I spoke software and networking as well I speak hardware.

Good move, Mrs J.

Wifi connected. That's also good.

You should be able to scan via a SANE driver on Mint 20. You cannot. I do not intend to debug that, so we move to looking at

https://github.com/alexpevzner/sane-airscan

Go to

https://download.opensuse.org/repositor ... .04/amd64/

and download and install sane-airscan_0.99.9+67.1_amd64.deb

I would be very interested in the output of

Code: Select all

scanimage -L

Code: Select all

avahi-browse -rt _ipp._tcp

Code: Select all

avahi-browse -rt _uscan._tcp
after the installation.

I can open GIMP and under File: Create: XSANE; Airscan
Before there was nothing and now I can click air scan and get a GUI to scan, but preview and scan buttons pop errors.
Please see attached screen shot

Thanks for the info. The above is an encouraging output. How do you go on with

Code: Select all

simple-scan
and

Code: Select all

scanimage -d "airscan:w1:Canon Canon MF240 Series"

Returns for code
Mrs J

simple-scan
Command 'simple-scan' not found, but can be installed with:
sudo apt install simple-scan

scanimage -d "airscan:w1:Canon Canon MF240 Series"
Output format is not set, using pnm as a default.
scanimage: output is not a file, exiting

It should be on the system.already. Document Scanner in the menu is the same program. Install it anyway.
scanimage -d "airscan:w1:Canon Canon MF240 Series"
Output format is not set, using pnm as a default.
scanimage: output is not a file, exiting
Entirely my fault. The command was incomplete. Use

Code: Select all

scanimage -d "airscan:w1:Canon Canon MF240 Series" > out.pnm

Code: Select all

simple-scan
A GUI spawned but it returned an error to communicate with the scanner. I verified the scanner was not in energy save mode and tried again, still an eroor communication

Code: Select all

scanimage -d "airscan:w1:Canon Canon MF240 Series" > out.pnm
Output format is not set, using pnm as a default.
scanimage: sane_read: Error during device I/O

The Canon's manual is at https://content.etilize.com/User-Manual/1035940046.pdf. Search it for WSD. It would seem that WSD scan is disabled by default. Enable it from the web interface at http://Canon992308.local or http://192.168.0.191 .

How's scanning now?

Thank you for a timely response. The author of sane-airscan, Alexander Pevzner, is aware of your issue (see https://github.com/alexpevzner/sane-airscan/issues/54) and has a favour to ask:
It would be nice if device owner could create a short instruction how to enable WSD on his device, similar to footnote [5] of my README. It could help other users of similar devices.
If you do this and decide to post here, I will pass the response on.

Please forgive the delay, I am currently wrapping up a semester and it is a bit tedious. Yes I will write the guide and post it here, after I catch up.

No problem, Mrs J; you have already proved very helpful and Alexander Pevzner has come up with his own guide. By all means review it, but I would not want you to exchange one bit of tedium for another :) .

Another user has submitted a guide for WSD setup on this device, Mrs J. Your involvement becomes moot. Thanks.
