HPLIP Fails on Mint 20 and Kubuntu 20.04

Post by gh4snow »

HPLIP works ok on Mint 19.3 and Kubuntu 19.10

HPLIP fails with the same hardware on Mint 20 and Kubuntu 20.04
It gives a Device Communication Error 5012.

I have posted an Bug Report on the HPLIP website.
They are working on a fix, but if you have an All-in-One printer,
you may need HPLIP-GUI, which means stick with Mint 19.3 or Kubuntu 19.10.

If you have a print only printer (no scanner), you can probably use it without HPLIP,
but you will be missing some features that HPLIP provides.

New Printers from HP and Epson do NOT provide drivers for Linux, only Windows.
So it would seem that one must eventually create a Win10 Print Server that would
allow Linux PC's to print to the Win10 Print Server. Perhaps Samba can do this ?
If you know how to set up a Win10 Print Server to print the files from a Linux PC,
then please email the info to me at gh4wi@gmx.us Thanks.

After Mint 20 install I installed my printer, taking the defaults.
I have HP8600 printer/copier/fax/scanner hooked to my local network. I discovered there was no connection to it when I tried to scan a document and it didn't work. Deleted printer and re-installed. Installation didn't work because of cups error.
Cleaned off the table next to my computer and moved the printer. Found a USB I could unplug and plugged it into the printer. Install printer again.
Printer works. . Scanner works.

Conclusion: Mate 20 works with HP printer on USB.

Remove USB. Re-install printer on Mate 20 ethernet network.

IPP Network install on ethernet network gives CUPS Error 'server-error-internal-error' . I found a way around it. Install as appSocket NOT IPP Network. I'm not sure what the difference is or it's significance, but I have a working printer now.

Taking the default can get you in trouble.

Tried GeckoLinux (a SUSE disrto) and found they are using HPLIP 3.20.6.
That version sees the HP Office Jet connected to my USB OK.
Sadly that version is not yet ready for Mint 20.
So I will stay on Mint 19.3 until HPLIP is upgraded.

Vanilla hplip 3.20.6 works with Qt4, but linux mint 20 have Qt5. I can't install hplip-3.20.6 from hplip site.
My case is broken scan in xsane, scanimage etc.
Workaround in my case: i'm install hplip, libsane-hpaio, and after that compile libsane-hpaio.so.1.0.0 from 3.20.6 and copy file into /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/sane
But it's wrong way...

Printer is HP Office Jet Pro 8620.
Device has a scanner, document feeder, printer and auto duplexer.
HPLIP-GUI is the problem related package.

HPLIP is not the only game in town and I haven't any desire to play with it.

Please give the outputs from

That's ok . ippusbxd is installed on Ubuntu 20.04 and is run when the printer is plugged in. cups-browsed auto-installs the printer and you should be able to print to the queue it sets up. The queue name is shown by

Code: Select all

lpstat -a
Please read the IPP-over-USB sections at https://wiki.debian.org/CUPSDriverlessPrinting. ipp-usb and ippusbxd do the same job.
snow@FOREST:~$ avahi-browse -rt _ipp._tcp
+ lo IPv4 HP Officejet Pro 8620 [CN525EW5PW] Internet Printer local
= lo IPv4 HP Officejet Pro 8620 [CN525EW5PW] Internet Printer local
hostname = [FOREST.local]
address = [127.0.0.1]
port = [60000]
port = [60000] indicates you are using IPP-over-USB

snow@FOREST:~$ driverless
ipp://HP%20Officejet%20Pro%208620%20%5BCN525EW5PW%5D._ipp._tcp.local/
This is a URI. Let's suppose cups-browsed is misbehaving. You can set up a queue yourself.

Code: Select all

lpadmin -p 8620 -v URI -E -m everywhere
substitituting for URI from above. Test printing with

Code: Select all

lp -d 8620 /etc/nsswitch.conf
snow@FOREST:~$ scanimage -L
device `escl:http://127.0.0.1:60000' is a ESCL HP Officejet Pro 8620 [CN525EW5PW] flatbed scanner
device `hpaio:/usb/HP_Officejet_Pro_8620?serial=CN525EW5PW' is a Hewlett-Packard HP_Officejet_Pro_8620 all-in-one
Can you scan with

Code: Select all

simple-scan "escl:http://127.0.0.1:60000"

I hope it clarified things sufficiently for you to be able to print.

Regarding the scanning command I gave: I would be quite interested in whether it works.

hplip-3.20.6 seems to be broken for me as well, but rather than struggle to install the latest I found that the version found in package manager installs and works without issue. The version in the repo is hplip-3.20.3 and was installed along with hplip-gui.

The Laser jet Pro 400mfp was not auto detected, but when the network ip address is entered in the manual install option, the printer shows up without problem installing drivers/plugin. At this point it seems to do everything that worked under Mint 17, 18, and 19, that is print, scan, scan to folder, fax, etc.

Maybe I got lucky and other may still have problems with this, but if this helps just one person it's worth the post.

Not lucky; just a completely different setup. gh4snow's device is USB-connected. Yours is network connected.

Hi. Just wanted to say that I had same problem on Linux Mint 20 with HP Ink Tank Wireless 415. Printer was printing only one from many copies. I have searched for answer but today it's just gone away. I tried to auto connect again and this time "Printers" have showed me under wireless printers HPLIP Image
Earlier I couldn't install HPLIP 3.20.6 from official HP site but after adding this printer and printing test page it shows me that there is HPLIP 3.20.3

If you know how to confirm this or how I can help others just write to me.
