You should first use Synaptic and see that sane is installed. Or you can list all installed packages with

Code: Select all

dpkg -l
and then search the results with the word sane. My Mint 20 has no sane installed.

Just a quick update on my quest to fix this issue.
Used Timeshift and restored the first saved restore point.
It was made, I assume when I installed LM20.0 in July this year.
After restore, I could indeed start Document Scanner, there were no printers installed so it gave me No Scanners Found message.
But it did start. So I don't think the issue is with my printer.
I then restored a restore point I made last Sat 21st. After reboot .. still will not start Document Scanner.

Going to try and purge sane, I think I did a re-install via synaptic with all the things I found on a 'sane' search. Did not help.
Going to try the procedure suggested here. Will keep thread advised.

Well I don't know what is the deal with sane ..
Looks like I don't have sane installed either. List of installed packages shows ..

Code: Select all

ii libsane:amd64 1.0.29-0ubuntu5.2 amd64 API library for scanners
ii libsane:i386 1.0.29-0ubuntu5.2 i386 API library for scanners
ii libsane-common 1.0.29-0ubuntu5.2 all API library for scanners -- documentation and>
ii libsane-hpaio:amd64 3.20.3+dfsg0-2 amd64 HP SANE backend for multi-function peripherals
and ..

Code: Select all

ii sane-airscan 0.99.20+79.1 amd64 SANE backend for MFP and document scanners that
ii sane-utils 1.0.29-0ubuntu5.2 amd64 API library for scanners -- utilities
Software Manager shows a Sane Package, but looks like "front end" looked at the sane.org web site, says it SHOULD be part of the Distro Package
and only has Source files.

I know Document Scanner worked around first of OCT this year, suspect sane-air-scan may have replaced something?
Sure could use some help. ;) Don't know what to do now.

Not to beat a dead horse, but I'm still unclear if you actually went into the printer's menu and printed out a network configuration. I don't see where you clearly stated you did that. Tell me if that option is in its menu.

Yes it is, I just did that, just to make sure (I'd show it if I could scan it) but IP Address 192.168.0.6 (set manually)
Subnet mask and Gateway are also correct.

It's not the printer, like I said, I went back to LM 20 install point, Document Scanner starts even without a printer or scanner.
I don't know what. I even re-installed driver I installed after I upgraded to LM 20 same thing.
I stuck. ;(

I'm at a loss too. See, my printer will work, but not the scanner if the IP address doesn't match the print out. Maybe someone else has ideas. Sorry, I couldn't help.

Does that model have a media port that allows scanning to be saved to it, then transfer it to your PC? Just as a work around.

I'll have to look into that, I don't think so. ;(
Wish Some one would enlighten us on if there would be a log file that would say why the application just doesn't start.
At some point things changed because in July, when I upgraded to LM 20 it worked with out a scanner
and in October it worked with the printer I have now.
Thanks,

I now have two printers installed now, it looks like (when I print from text editor, they show up)
Brother - MCF-L2685DW
MFCL2685DW
Multiple printers showing up are caused by CUPS autodetection.
If you want to fix that to only one, run the following in your shell:
sudo systemctl disable cups-browsed
