Canon MB5450 : print only 1 page

Post by lynkowsky »

Hello,
Until last week, I was using Mint 18.3. My printer was working perfectly fine.
I have just installed (not upgraded : new installation) Mint 20 Cinnamon.
I have installed the drivers for my printer (cnijfilter2-5.40-1). It prints, but only 1 page. There is not any error message. Printing, it just stops (many many tries !).
My printer : Canon Maxify MB5450

I have tried and print from libreoffice and from Xreader : same problem.
I have tried and installed cups-backend-bjnp : same problem
When I print the printer test page, I can read "driverless".

Cannot found anything similar via google search. So, I am quite lost. Please help (about me : I can use the terminal, I can solve many problems via google search, but I am far to be an expert).
Thanks

Which one do you mean?
  • The document is multi-page. Only the first page is printed.
  • n copies of a certain page is needed. Only one is printed.

This morning, I did only test "The document is multi page, only the first page is printed.".

But, as you ask for it, I've tested now "n copies of a certain page". Does not work too : only 1 page is printed.

I'm not sure how a fresh installation could have your drive so full already, but system performance can be negatively impacted by a full root partition. That might be a factor in this issue.

Partition:
ID-1: / size: 915.40 GiB used: 819.62 GiB (89.5%) fs: ext4 dev: /dev/sda2

I have a copy of the saves of my second computer on this computer.Root and files are on the same partition.

Code: Select all

*cupsManualCopies: true
Edit the PPD to have

Code: Select all

*cupsManualCopies: True
and restart the cups daemon with

Code: Select all

systemctl restart cups
This should possibly fix the second issue. I wouldn't expect the change to affect the issue you are concerned about, but let's see.

I can see from the inxi results you only have the one partition, but you are getting close to the point you will not be able to log in to Mint because your root partition is so full. That fullness could be contributing to this issue.

When an operating system starts, there are a number of temporary files which are created and deleted as processes start and end. There needs to be room for those files. I do not know if that is the reason you are only getting one page, but it could be a factor.

I still cannot print a several pages document. I still cannot print several copies of 1 page.

OK, let's see if this is the problem. Disk cleaned. Computer restarted. Nothing changes :( (but my computer seems to use less ressources, thanks for the advice)

Your Canon_MB5400_series print queue has been set up and is managed by cups-browsed and cups-browsed has regenerated the PPD. You could try without restarting cups. "true" is incorrect. Binary options in PPDs are case-sensitive and the Adobe PPD standard specifies "True". "true" is a bug that is fixed in a later version of cups-filters.
I still cannot print a several pages document. I still cannot print several copies of 1 page.
We can set up and manage our own queue:

Code: Select all

lpadmin -p testcanon -v URI -E -m everywhere
URI is the output from

Code: Select all

driverless
Is it possible to print several pages in a document with the testcanon queue?

No (neither from a several pages document nor several copies of a 1 page document).

The testcannon ppd had "true" and not "True". I changed it. But it does not solve anything.

I have an older Canon pixma. After installing LM20, I turned on the printer and plugged it in. I was prompted to download drivers. Is that how you installed the driver?

The reason I ask is the Canon support page has cnijfilter2-source-5.40-1.tar.gz as supported for Ubuntu 16.04 (LM18.3). I do not know if that is the same file you downloaded or if any thing has changed in related code since then that might be causing this issue.

I seem to recall having this "one page" issue and I remember just doing all the pages one at a time to get my document out as a short term fix. I think I ended up reinstalling the driver to get it to work properly, but I can't recall for sure.

Having

Code: Select all

*cupsManualCopies: True
in testcanon.ppd should help with the second issue.

What application are you printing from and what is the document? Have you tried other applications and documents?

I used the same drivers than when I was using LM18. I have checked on canon website, there is not any more recent drivers. I allready tried and reinstall the drivers. But it does not solve anything.

I have tried different document (I even create a test document, with only "test" on page 1 and "test2" on page2), in libreoffice, xed and xreader
