Low laser toner warning with toner at 99% full

Post by PDB1959 »

I posted this in the Newbie section which was probably not the best place to post it, so I am hoping someone here in the printer & scanning section of the forum may be able to advise me.

I recently replaced my toner in my Samsung printer and have noted that when printing in LinuxMint 20 and 20.1 the printer reports a low toner warning, which is incorrect! My daughters Mac also report the toner as low, My windows PC sees no issues. I sent my original toner back for recycling so I have nothing at present to compare this new toner cartridge to.

The printer accessed via a browser reports correctly the current toner level as shown in the attached image, as does the LCD display on the printer and also on a Printout which states the toner level is at 99%.

I have removed the CUPS printing system in LinuxMint using 'Terminal' and cleared all all my printer settings. I then rebooted my dual boot PC and reinstalled CUPS using Terminal, I then added my printer using the printer driver supplied in CUPS. I have even edited the cups printers.conf file to reflect the true toner level but after pressing the refresh button in the Ink/Toner level section I get the 'toner-low-report'! At the end of the day I can still print with the Samsung printer. My other printer has no problems and the ink report is accurate.

Here is the contents of the printer.conf file:

Does anyone have an idea of what can be causing this issue.

Is it an original cartridge or a copy?
Could you take it out, tap the sides gently, then shove it back in again whilst your fingers are crossed?

You appear to be using some Samsung offering (SyncThru) for obtaining information. This has nothing to do with Mint. I suggest you contact Samsung.

It is OEM Samsung Toner. The toner reports in the printer display as of today 96%. The web interface (Syncthru Web Service) also display the same info. So basically the toner is full. I'ts only the CUPS printing system that reports the toner at less than 4% on both LinuxMint and MacOS. Windows does not have any toner level problems indicated.

Which would seem to suggest it is something to do with CUPS not getting the correct toner level signal from the chip on the toner cartridge. It's just frustrating that the low toner warning keeps popping up the default printer in both LinuxMint (and MacOS). At the end of the day the printer still works.

Clearly this is not a Linux Mint problem. While everyone here endeavours to do their very best, we are all users just like you. If this is a CUPS issue, and it looks like it is, there may or may not be anything that anyone here can do, so your best course of action is going to be taking the issue up with cups.org. It's the best course of action because that is where the expertise that you need resides.

Okay thanks, I will try that approach. I was just hoping someone else here might have had a similar issue and could point me to the solution.

I have had a similar problem in the past with an HP printer because the version of HPLIP (the HP software for printing) within Linux Mint was not current. The solution for me was to obtain later HPLIP software. Perhaps you need to do the same with your Samsung software.

That's quite ok. Sometimes we don't have the answers, and my intent is only to help you get an answer. While cliffcoggin's advice is worth looking at, installing a later version of CUPS, or even the Samsung software, could bring dependency hell down upon your head, so I would be cautious of that approach before you've had chance to discuss it on the CUPS mailing list. That said, I presume you have the latest Samsung software anyway.

Out of interest, when the toner reports 95%, let us know if CUPS reports the toner at 5%. Or, if you use the printer a lot, when the toner reports 90%, see if CUPS reports it as 10%.
