Brother MFC-J825DW with Mint 20.1

Post by dmfw »

I am attempting to get the MFC-J825DW Brother printer to print with Linux mint 20.1. (Scanning not needed)

I first tried Brother's install script and it installs software/drivers. Mint/CUPs sends something to the printer but all I receive is a blank page.

I also, on a fresh installation of Mint, installed (via DPKG) Brother's LPR and CUPs drivers but Mint will not recognize or communicate with the printer. (Yes I am using the correct IP address for the printer.)

Notes.
--- I also can not get the Brother script/drivers to work under Ubuntu 20.4.
--- The install script and driver worked correctly under Linux mint 18.3.
--- The printer prints under Windows 8.1 and 10.

Because I'm having an issue with both mint 20.1 and Ubuntu, I am wondering if the Brother drivers are no longer compatible with the 20.04 base.

Any help would be appreciated.

No problems here with an HL-L8260CDW (and an old HL4140CN) network printer under 20.1. I always install the debs for the driver and cupswrapper manually instead of using Brother's install script. Not strictly necessary as it supports driverless printing.

When you add printer and tell mint it is a network printer, does it find it?

Update

I attempted to get the printer (unsuccessfully) working with Linux lite and MX Linux.

Luckily, I can still print from my Windows laptop!

When I buy my next printer I'm definitely going to purchase a unit that can both scan to and print from a USB stick.
